Overhead gauge mount - opinions

did a search and didn't see a lot of opinions so ---

You guys with the overhead mounts -

How do you like them?

How's readability?
Night glare?
Rearview mirror distraction?
Installation?
edit: oh yah.. what's it look like from outside?

Any gottcha's? Wish you had something else, kinda thing.

Thanks in Adv.

How do you like them?
First off, I love my windshield pod.
How's readability?
Readability is fine, the gauges are angled towards the driver. Not quite as convenient to see as A-pillar mount would be but obviously no harder to see than looking in the rearview mirror.
Night glare?
I have Di-Pricols which are poorly lit so there is no night glare. The newer Optix Di-Pricols and the Isspros pretty much match the factory dash gauges in lighting from what I understand.
Rearview mirror distraction?
It doesn't interfere with the rearview at all. There's a little less than an inch or space between the bottom of the pod and the top of the mirror.
Installation?
Would have been a little easier if I had done an A-pillar. I only say that because with the windshield pod, you have to tuck the tubing and wires into the headliner. I did this by covering the tip of a large flat-head screwdriver with some tape and carefully pushing them in there one at a time (no need to drop the whole headliner). Also, if you decide to go this way, make sure your wires and gauge lines are long enough. I'd say, at least ten feet. Most gauge installation kits come equipped to do an A-pillar install but this requires a few more feet of material so specify this when you order. Diesel Performance Parts and Diesel Performance Shops both have some pretty good installation kits that come with wiring, tubing, fittings, etc. These are the two vendors that I went through to get the stuff for my gauges. Their customer service was really top notch.
what's it look like from outside?
Not even noticeable looking in from the windshield. The black part on the windshield dips down above the mirror and the pod pretty much follows the contour of that.
Any gottcha's? Wish you had something else, kinda thing.
Not that I can think of. If I took my truck to the strip or pulled sleds with it, I might prefer a pillar mount where I wouldn't have to move my eyes very much to seem them. I really like the look of this type of pod because it's subtle (it doesn't advertise the fact that you have extra gauges or a modified truck like a pillar pod does) and using the Mopar paint to match the color of the interior, it looks like it's supposed to be there (not like it's something that was added on).

this is where I have my attitude and it is where I would put analog gauges if I ran them. I just like the fact you can run all your gauges in one spot even if you want to run 4 of them. The visibility is fine. Then again I am lifted so the pillar is just not an option for me. I like my grab handle.

I got the Autometer dash mount with Stewart Warner guages. Pillar mount I could not see past, and cubby hole I could not see while driving. Overhead was a consideration until I had to install it. Dash mount is just right!

the 3m stuff that came with my attidude is doing fine so far. the attitude is lighter than analog gauges though. the type of mounting adheasive given to you could be an issue though. that could depend on the company supplying the mound. the juice mount is made by edge and comes with a 3m adhesive soltion. it is not a velcro but a plastic velcro like adhesive material. I have not had hot hot days yet though.

I am sure if you called some tech support at a big company they make high temp adhesive materials. IT worried me to start with but so far so good.

Personally I like additional guages in the overhead pod rather than either than on top of the dash or in the cubby hole below the HVAC controls; besides my Dual Air Command module fits in that cubby hole. I had the same problem with the overhead I finally got some gray silicon adhesive and stuck the front edge of the overhead pod to the headliner. No reliability problems at all.
I have my "less" important gauges in the overhead pod, air pressure for the exhaust brake, fuel pressure, and oil pressure. The real important ones boost and pyrometer are mounted on the steering column. It's not that the overhead gauges are difficult to see it's just I will scan my factory instrument cluster several times more often than the overhead pod. See my photo gallery for my setup. Good luck!

Xonid,

If the slow down in sales of A pillars vs the increase in sales of overheads is any indication they are very very popular!

The adhesive issue is easy, if you or anyone has ever used any type of armour all in the truck (sometimes the fumes from the plastic in a new truck will do it too), you will have to use a prep solvent or lacquer thinner to clean the glass before you attach the mushroom hook and loop tape. If the glass is clean you won't have any issues with the mount falling off, plus about 70% of the weight is supported by the lip that goes under the headliner anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

Hey Pull U 2 - did you tried duct tape, I hear it can fix anything.... just joking.. you have a good point about bouncing around, I'll consider it.

Sailpipes - looked at your pic from the front, looks like you can't even tell it's there.

thanks guys.

I got my boost and fuel press. guages in the overhead and like it alot, originally I only had the boost guage in the pod and when I had to drop it back down to install the fuel press. guage I had a heck of a time getting it loose, thought the pod was gonna break,so no adhesion problems on mine and that hook and loop holds good to,I have know concerns with it falling down,it has been there for over a year and no problems.
