Newbie Turbo Question
 

OK so I am new to the sight and to the diesel world. I have an 05 3500. I just bought a PS62 from II and I have a couple of questions. First off the only mods currently done to the truck are an AFE stage 2 intake and a Juice with attitude. It is a six speed. What I am curious about is if I can through the turbo on now or if I need to worry about head studs or any other mods first. I plan on studs and a clutch in the near future. Any help would be great.

You dont need studs, the 62 wont build enough boost. You might want to upgrade to the "Hot" juice and get a fuel system though.

i agree you can install the turbo now, set the boost elbow to maintain 45psi or so. you'll love the egt reduction, and the top end power over the stocker.

i disagree that the 62 cant supply enough boost to eventually warrant studs, mine easily gets up to 50 psi, which is where i set it. maybe the sps is quite a bit different than a ps?

put it on and don't sweat the head studs, you dont need them till around 65+ psi of boost. That turbo will spool good with the edge and even better with the hot .

Now there is a topic for discussion, I personally think that after 50 psi you are on borrowed time. I have heard about 50 50 on what psi for studs. I personally like to sway to the safe side

I did a lot checking into this before I bought my turbo since it is not wastegated. anything above 50psi, and you are gambling. Sure there are trucks over 50psi without studs, doesn't mean YOUR truck will like it.

I have seen 3rd gens go with twins and around 70 psi with know problems but if your that worried about it go for the studs. The 2nd gens will blow at 50 psi but the 3rd gens have a much better head gasket so I don't tell people that they need studs till 60+ psi because I have never had one blow on just boost alone, nitrous thats a different story. I wouldn't run a 62 over 50 psi anyway. So for added insurace go for the studs if you want, its not a bad idea to play it safe.

No expert here on this matter, but I would cautiously add that injection timing, fueling, EGT, boost and drive pressure all combine to play a factor. please correct me if I am wrong.
