My truck is an 03 and it has a cat. I think trucks sold in California had them.

Unless you're planning on more very serious mods, save yourself some money and leave the stock exhaust alone (unless you just gotta have bigger piped cuz they look so cool), just change the muffler but be warned some of the "hi performance" stuff people use are VERY loud.
A dealer on another forum posted he put a 2nd Aeroturbine muffler in front of his cat to quiet down his truck, he says before he did that his wife could hear him coming from 5 blocks away, now THAT'S loud and those aero things are not cheap.

I put a 40" Nelson muffler on my truck, it's a straight through design, not obnoxiously loud and cost me a whole $67 at my local Cummins store. Pics, part numbers in my gallery.

Use the money you saved on something like gauges or programmers or watever...

03 SO's did have a cat, but HO's did not. I say go with a stragiht pipe or stack, both will be very loud, louder than a dual pipe gasser I have heard. But it is loud in a good way. you will like it.

I think I'll probably go with a 5" straight pipe with a 6" tip like hump and a few other guys had suggested. Anything else i can do to make it loud beyond straightpiping it?

I'm also eventually going to take the Silencer Ring out of the Turbo too, probably within the next 3-4 months.

take the silencer out now, get an airbox or do some mods to it so you can hear the turbo, straight pipe it and put your foot to the floor i would think that would be loud

I'd recommend buying an entire exhaust system from the turbo back and driving it for a month with the supplied muffler. The Silverline unit sounds good and is fairly cheap. Then, take off the muffler and band clamp a piece of straight pipe in to see if you like it. I know on the '06 and '07's the exhaust system is only supported by the turbo, the muffler and the tailpipe. So, if you do remove the muffler, get some universal hangers to help take the load off the turbo and tail pipe.

Has anyone run an Aeroturbine muffler? I'm kinda interested in one because my buddy has one on his Dmax and it sounds good.

If youre going for loudness then staight pipe 5" with 6" tip but I wouldnt do it if you do a lot of highway driving cause itll drive you insane. Aftermarket exhaust systems usually sound pretty good too. My stacks are pretty loud too, probly one of the louder trucks ive heard, check em out in my profile.

I keep hearing everybody say not to do this if you do a lot of highway driving. Is it really that bad in the cab?

I really want my truck to make people turn their heads when i drive by.
Kinda miss that from my last truck (last truck wasnt extremely loud, but it was pretty sharp looking).

And the Silencer Ring is that easy to take off? Never really done any engine mods so i really don't want to screw up the turbo trying to take out the silencer ring...
