myth about silencer ring?
myth about silencer ring?
ok i have removed my silencer ring and now my turbo sings freely which is awesome...i also read around the time i removed the ring that removing the ring only affects sound and nothing else..when i removed the ring i noticed little vents underneath and wondered what they were..so i searched a bit on google and found this::
''..Capable of producing more than 500 horsepower at the wheels and able to run in excess of 35 pounds of boost. This Holset HX-35 also comes standard with a “Map Width Enhancement” groove. This groove is machined into the inlet of the compressor housing to allow air to be fed to the second set of blades on the compressor wheel. This increases efficiency and overall air flow by more than 10%. All Holset turbochargers come standard with a 360 degree thrust bearing... ''
could this mean that removing the silencer ring not only makes the truck sound cooler but also ever so slightly affects performance because of more airflow and better efficiency?
p.s. i know i probably sound like a noobie and will be proven so when someone replies lol
thanx

35psi from an hx35 definately ain't enough to support 500rwhp. If those grooves were worth something I'm sure somebody on this site woulda mentioned it by now. Interesting reading though. Maybe they have those grooves in another version of the hx35 but not in these trucks.
More noise and same or little more air! Someone with a Boost Gauge needs to run the truck up a hill with the cruise on and see what the boost is. The Place the Ring back in there turbo and pull the same hill at the same speed with cruise on and see if the truck is making more or less boost!
Less Boost ='s More Efficient AirFlow
More Boost='s Less Efficient AirFlow
I'll bet that there is minimal if any (Less Boost) without the ring!
SOUNDS GREAT THO!

This would mean that at 30psi without the ring the truck is more efficient at making and using the boost than with the ring- - - - -but there are a lot of other varaibles that need to be looked at in this test to see which is better like, MPG's, EGT's, Engine Load at certian RPM's, blah, blah!!!

35psi on a little import 4banger gas motor will probably do 500ish... flywheel at least...
in some instances (HY) removing the silencer ring can help aleviate surge... an HX35 w/ a 12cm housing shouldn't experience surge with the ring in place, but removing it is always your best bet!

Guys, the 3rd gen hy35 turbo (early)has a 9 cm housing hence the quick spool up, especially with the auto tranny. However that said, over boosting, past stock config does, give you bigger numbers on the boost gauge. The reality is your only pumping in hotter air with no increase or benefit to exhaust temps. That is a fact and dyno proven. Ditch the ring! If you can't figure it out take it as a hint and step away from the motor!

!! Great Numbers on the stocker! What was the EGT's like???
