I'm partially dreaming, partially planning ahead. I've been thinking lately... what would I do if something happened to my motor? Basic rebuild? Sell/trade it for a newer one? Etc. And in the interest of research, I wanted to see if there are any places that do monster builds on these motors, with towing in mind? My 2005 has been great for the 13 years I've owned it (got it in 07 with 48k, now has 125k). All I've ever run is a Smarty program (7 for regular use, 5 when towing) and have a South Bend Con-OFE clutch that's been in it for over 60k miles. I also put an S&B intake on it a few years back, and recently I put an MBRP exhaust on it because the old one had rusted out.

To be honest, I've never been terribly impressed with the power. I had a 2001 6sp that had an HX-40 turbo, DD3 injectors, DD UPM, 4" exhaust and intake, and it was MUCH stronger. But being an NV5600, it shifted like absolute crap (IMO -- please, not trying to start debate on this).

Anyway... if the motor were to go, I'd already have to put quite a bit into a regular rebuild. Why not build it up? Is it possible to modify these to be able to handle power levels at or above the new ones making 1000 lbs-ft stock? Based on my Smarty Mode 5, my truck should be at 415 hp but I dunno about torque.. 800 maybe? But I still have to pay close attention to EGTs. I wish I had the money to just go buy a new one with the AISIN and 1000 lbs-ft and just be able to set the cruise and relax and not worry about it, but I don't have $75k.

So what all can be done in a rebuild for that sort of thing? Upgrade head? Valves? Cam? I've had my eye on a bigger turbo for a while, but at $1800, it won't happen for at least another year or more. Injectors would help, but then there's the EGT issue. I'll need injectors eventually.. been holding out til I HAD to do something.

Curious as to what everybody is aware of in terms of really building one of these into a tow monster.
