It's Turbo Time! Htt 62 or 64?

Current mods are in my sig. Eventually I plan on studs, springs, cp3 upgrade, Flux injectors.....

I know my little stocker turbo has got to be crying with the insane drive pressures and EGTs. I have been contemplating turbos for a little while and feel fairly confident I will go with an HTT 62/71/13ss or 64/71/13ss. Eventually I may add a turbo and have a set of MPI twins...but that is on down the road. So in the mean time........which of the 2 turbos listed would be better for my truck and my use.

I tow a heavy toyhauler loaded down with water/ATVs etc. usually once a month or so. 20K gross, truck and trailer. But I want to be able to go play at the race track without backing off due to EGTs.

Would the 64 be to laggy? This is my daily driver and I don't want to regret going to big or to little. This may be an easier decision if I had a 6speed. 64 for sure. But since I now have a built DTT automatic which direction? Thanks for any and all input!

I'm looking for the same info. I have a trailer that weighs less; I only gross out at ~17K. So HTT 62/71/13ss or 64/71/13ss?

I figure that with an exhaust manifold and a cam, the lag will be a lot less. Add some F1.5 sticks and it should be good. The question I have is will the 64 surge while towing or daily driving?

What made you pick the 71 over the 65? Are you going to get injectors?

Towing that heavy I would stay with a 62mm compressor. Either a 71 or 65 turbine would be fine. A 71 would be better at wot the 65 better at part throttle and spool up. Tim

If you are towing heavy and to me 17k plus is pretty heavy, get a 62. If you need a cam, sticks and intercooler to make a 66+ turbo work you may as well just do twins. Also, any of the 62 class turbos work perfect on a set of towing twins, so when you want more turbo you will already have the "little huffer".

Get the 62/71/13ss and get an exhaust manifold of your choice.. BD is an ATS, I've heard HTT has a 3rd gen manifold, but I haven't seen it.

It works really nice towing a very heavy toy hauler... We use my wifes truck with the 62/71/13ss and it works really well!

I'd say get the 64, but I know you want to step up to twins one day - and the 62 will be better on top.

I'd say with having the auto to get the 62... I had a Super 62 and it blew up and I tried the HTT QD 64 and man I can't believe the differance on the top end with it compared to the 62, but for everyday driving I'd say the 62...

I wanted to keep the drive pressure down in the higher RPMs. I figured a Silver 62 (74mm) would probably be a little too big to spool up.

I knew deep down that I should stick to the 62, but a 64 would be so much more fun while not towing. I also figured that a 71mm wheel would be okay if I added a cam, exhaust manifold and [small] sticks to help spool it.

Now, the next question. How does high altitude (7000'+) affect the turbo choice (both towing and non-towing)?

Ok thanks guys! Sounds like the 62/71/13SS is the answer.

I just know im gonna add some stix and be pushing more power than it is "rated" for, in the not to distant future. Everything is a compromise, I know. I Just hope it doesn't get to toasty, until I get the twins (if I ever get them)......which was one reason for inquiring about the 64, instead.

A 64/65/13 works great in twins too...and cost less. ;-)
