Exclamation Smarty may make more noise

fjbiker - Yes the Smarty can make the Cummins louder. The altered injector timing and duration that's in the new software brings out some of the old Cummins knock. I wouldn't worry about it, others have noticed it also.
Remember the 12V and earlier 24V motors, they rattled like crazy. The 3rd Gen trucks have multiple injection events to help quiet them down and help with emissions. The Smarty software changes the injection event for more power and some of the old rattle comes back.
PS - I'm a firm believer in the additives especially now with the implementation of ULSD which contains less lubricants. I use Power Service but I'm sure other additives with lubricants are beneficial also. The Cummins' site says no additives are necessary but the first time I added some I honestly can say my engine started running smoother. Just my 2 cents.

I would NOT take what the dealer has to say as fact. Dealers are notoriously known for doing and saying very STUPID things. Remember, these are the same guys that try and add on the "wax protection" for $500.00 that they spray on in 5 minutes. The last time I went to the dealer, they had no idea that there was a HIGH-IDLE feature on the trucks.

With that being said. There is NOT ONE person on here that can honestly state that the Power Service additive caused a failure. At the same time, MANY people on here can state that additives such as PS have helped....Think about it....

The "NEW" Smarty update made my 2006 louder and sound more like my gen 2.

It is nothing like my gen 2 but similar in flavor.. I had gotten used to the no timing rattle of the gen 3 and the old Smarty SW did not have really any timing rattle....... SOOoooo When I loaded the NEW version:

Smarty S-06A Ver. 4.05A, Data: 3.05A
Moderate torque management
increase

I got some noticeable timing rattle. It sounds more like a real diesel now. I have used both #5 and #7 with the new update.

i found the rattle really bad with #3, but #5 doesnt seem to have it as bad.

Another symptom of an injector going south is diesel in the crankcase, a sudden decrease in mileage (2-4 mpg), and the P0148 code coming up while crusing.

I have had the exact same experience as above with the new smarty software, I use 2.05A level 3: Love the smarty!

I notice mine at idle and low rpm, not consistant (truck runs great!)....I took my smarty off to take the truck to the dealer for service and the rattle was no longer there....(you should do that to eliminate other variables such as the injectors)...so i know its the smarty programs fueling / timming advance.....I had asked bob w when I first noticed it and he said its normal for the new program.....no worries!

I just uploaded a program w/out timing and the motor seems much smoother and the noise is much less noticable

Bob posted elsewhere that those of us (me included) who are running stock/stock software and have the rattle to download one of the versions of injector/stock turbo softwares and the rattle will all but go away.
Why, dunno, but I posted the question on another board and we'll see what Bob has to say about it.

I have not downloaded as suggested yet.

- Is there a significant increase in timming on the new Dec 31 software vs previous versions? It would appear so, but 10%, 20%,...???
- Should i be concerned about the timming rattle / cyl pressures / anything else? (I dont have any other power adders stacked with the smarty) I love my smarty, but am willing to sacrifice some performance / mileage in order to maintain good engine health.

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

Yes the new version has a different timing than the previous one. I've raised the timing a little more for a more efficient combustion. NO harm to the engine!!! If you don't like the sound of the engine with the higher timing ( hey, it's a diesel...) you could update your Smarty with the version for
Aftermarket injectors. That one has the same timing as you had previously.

Helps?

Marco

Mine rattle pretty good with the new SMARTY update and the Rokktech sensor.
So I ended up removing the Rokktech which helped a bunch.
