I am new to the Diesel "do it yourself" mods, and need some help with instructions on how to perform this Tone ring mod on my 2004 2500 4x4 305/555. I had a hard time understanding how to do this, because I havent done a hole lot of wrenching on my truck yet. Is there any way one or more of you guy's could develop a sort of idiots guide or instructions on how to do this mod step by step, and list the tools needed? I am talking about the mod that give a 2deg advancement! Thanks to all!!!

""crawl under truck. loosen tensioner [1/2" ratchet] and move belt out of the way [slip it off the a/c compressor pulley]

with 15mm socket and ratchet [1/2" drive best] remove the 4 bolts holding the engine viberation dampner to the crank snout.

work out dampner/pulley and set aside [on 600 engines, you might need to remove fan shroud]

remove the tone wheel and locate the dowel pin hole. file/grind down what you want to remove from the counter clock wise side of the dowel hole [with dowel hole at 12:00 position, left side to remove materal]

you can grind out a little under 1mm safely, and even if you go too much, the bolts will prevent it from going too far in advance when you reinstall it.

put modded tone wheel back on the crank snout, and work dampner back into place and start all the mounting bolts.

hold the tone wheel in the position where you want it [so it does not slide back towards stock position] and snug up the mounting bolts.

in a cross pattern, tighten the mounting bolts to 30 ft/lbs torque. now, in a step or 2, bring all the bolts tighter by 60°

reinstall belt. visually check for belt alignment on all pulleys

start engine and again visually check for belt alignment on what you can see from above with engine running [watch your fingers...!]

This sounds pretty easy, but what about the different procedures concearning the loosening of the bolts. How do you loosen them without using the engine, and do I have to hold the flywheel or something to do this? Also, I have been reading different posts, which is the correct amount to file off the tone wheel, I've read .75mm???? Is this correct? Also, I read someone posted that you cant file too much, because the 4 mounting holes keep it in place, So I cant over do it too much more than 2deg advancement? Thanks for all the help

 

Also, some are saying to move it counter clockwise measureing the teeth, some say 1 tooth equals 2degreess, others say 3?? I also heard to move it 2/3rds of a tooth, which is 2 degrees. Im just not sure which is correct, as I dont want to mess up my truck.

Also, has anyone seen any problems with this mod, or if you think it could possibly jepordize the overall longevity of the truck?
