How to launch

I had one of the older 5.0 mustangs try me from a red light yesterday. About the time he hit third gear he pulled ahead and about at the same time I had to get off of it because a car turned in front of me. However I believe I should have been able to take him with my xzt turned up. Any help?

1.Hold brake, 2.push throttle to build boost 1500rpm or so, 3. release brake and hold on.

Also, be sure to put her in 4lock before you do this or your back tires are just going to break loose and you will be left in the dust while you roast off about $100+ worth of your tires.

You won't be "turning up" that XZT model too much

Any advice to those of us with 6 speeds?
I think some start out in 3rd gear?
(Can't wait for the BDTD)

With the 6spd, it all depends on how fast you can row...I think that launching in 3rd out of 6th is going to give the launch to whoever you're racing in a BIG way though, just my opinion.

I've left lights in 3rd by accident the odd time, it's surprising how well it does.
Problem with a stick is no way to get the turbo going at the light, but I didn't really buy this thing to race, was just curious as to what others do when a little kid in a souped up Honda pulls up on the right to pass ...

heh, back in the day i was leaving the line with ~40 psi of boost in 4 high in 3rd gear. Of course i had a double disk, but still.

i would use the left side of my right foot to hold the brake, the right side of my right foot to push the acclerator to the floor (i found just a hair over redline works GREAT) then my left foot for the clutch.

Rev up the truck, hold the brake, slip the clutch until youve built the desired amount of boost, then DUMP (and i mean dump) the clutch and let off the brake and hold the throttle to the floor all at the same time. i did smoke all 6 tires on my truck while i did this.

and you sure as heck better hold on. because the steering gets squirrely (sp?) when the front tires go looking for traction.

-p.s. this is real hard on equiptment

Yea I also do 3 gear launches all the time, not really a big deal anymore. Whenever I drag race that's the gear I start in. (alot faster) When I wanna do A real nice burnout and wanna waste my tires, Just put er' in 4th gear 2 wheel drive with about 40# and let er eat.

Our trucks are pretty heavy, so in the '05 with BFG 315s, I used to launch at 2000rpm in 2nd hi (no need for 4WD!) and leave pretty hard with 5-10 feet of rubber on the road... 3rd came up mighty quick and had time to scan gauges while grabbing 4th.

p.s. no way I could have done that without the ladder bars.

It should be noted that any of this should only be done on a dual disk clutch because on a single disk you are just going to fry that thing. It might hold the first couple of times but not much after that.

I think the stock clutch behind a G56 would be fine if you didn't make a bad habit out of it.
