Hot summer fill-ups with fuel tank vent mod
Hot summer fill-ups with fuel tank vent mod
I am considering doing this mod, but am concerned by the warnings regarding fuel expansion. I often fill up at lunch not too far from work and am afraid I would be tempted to fill to the neck. I know most of you guys drive more that me so might not fill up and park it two miles later, but have any of you in the hotter climates had trouble?
Would it be advisable/possible to put a blow-off valve inline on the vent? I realize this is a complete environmental hazard and I would feel like a complete jerk/moron the first time it happened, but would be better than the same, but with more permanent damage to the tank...

I've see several posts on here mention that the tank is the same used for gasoline, but I would also like to hear some people say they've never had problems... according to the all-knowing internet diesel DOES still expand even if not as much as gasoline.
I did the vent mod a few years ago and never had an issue with leaks in the 100+ degree days. When I was still driving my truck to work I would fill up around lunch, drive 50 yards and park it till quiting time with no issue.
Now... my vent tank mod is a piece of line running from each vent into a 'T' fitting, then into a inline style fuel filter... Mine still expands fine. Are you talking about capping it off completly?
There is the mod that relocates the fuel filler neck to the highest point of the tank... ?
I do not have any problems.

If you are talking about the vent relocation to the highest part of the tank I would say you are fine.
I did this mod 2 years ago and have also filled up and parked it for several hours in 100° + heat and no issues.

Cool, thanks guys! Arizona and Texas were the states I was wanting to hear from; NM and FL would have also worked...
I was talking about relocating the filler neck vent to the higher spot on the tank towards the rear but figure I might as well put a tee and filter in the other two lines while I'm in there.
Now I just have to convince the wife that a FASS or AirDog setup would be good insurance and easy since I'll already be in there...

I never did the vent mod but I DO always top mine off until I cannot get another drop in there. Never had an issue with expansion because I have to drive a few miles to get home. I used to do this with my 1st gen and it would end up venting out onto the ground in the summer....
