Homemade airbox mods.....
Homemade airbox mods.....
Yesterday I drilled a four inch hole in my air box and put in a AFE Pro-Guard 7 filter and then took out the baffles in the intake hose and the silencer ring and man does the turdo sing now.
I recommend this easy mod to anyone who does'nt want to spend the $ that a Afe intake or the others cost. Also my West Texas Gray Turbo bird sings better to since my kitty died.

Now just add some 4" heater pipe to it and put a piece of pantyhose over the end to keep the dirt out and you will be all set. I had done the same thing before I went with the BHAF.....

Mine was very similar but I got the sheet metal piping and it hung down to the bumper. I was going to turn it towards the front and have a Ram-Air system but I was scared I would pull water into it so I never finished it.
I used a 2" hole saw on the botom and front side of the air box (put several holes in each surface), got the stove pipe from Home Depot, and DID notice an improvement in throttle responce (much beter actually).
When I pulled the silencer ring from the trubo I lost about 1 full mpg on both highway and around town driving so it went back in... That extra noise you hear from removeing the ring is turbulant air, NOT a good thing to be introducing into your intake just before the turbo! Also after a few hours on the highway that whistle that was cool around town get reeeaaaalllly old.

I noticed a slight increase in spool up but no real mpg improvements. I think the
benefit will be slightly lower egt's next summer when I tow again. I still have not
installed my guages yet (no time) so I will experiment once the pryro is in by blocking
the new opening to the box and see if the temps increase or not.
My 4" plastic sewer elbow is facing directly out towards the front truck of the truck.

I never noticed a difference when I did mine but I had already removed my silencer ring and sound baffles plus I was already running the AFE filter. As far as the turbo whistle, How could you ever get tired of that???
I don't even notice it anymore and even my wife doesn't mind it. We've taken a few trips and she has never said a word about it. I love the way it gets louder as my foot presses down on the accelerator, especially on the highway..
