Homemade 6" Air intake, AKA the "whistler", tech write-up
I was looking around at air filters and i found a K&N (RF-1044) that is the same specs as the AMSOil filter (eauu6080). I also tried to find a PG7 filter, but only found OE replacements and don't know if those will flow like the others. I was wondering which filter is best?
I like dry filters so a Amsoil then the AFE DRY would be the the top two choices for me.
I still need to call Amsoil and ask for some real CFM & micron numbers.
Thanks Willi for all the info. I've been enjoying the Whistler for a couple of months now. Any chance of posting a pic of the Stage II box? Need some cooler air. If you are planning to sell a few, put me on the list.
What prefilter should I get?
Thanks. Rick.

No big deal ****** don't worry about it. Put me back on the list too. "Chrome" powder coat, or black if they can't do that "chrome" kind.
I need one of these myself, K&N prefilter: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...&postcount=198

yes you can see day light right below the filter..but the tire can NOT throw mud or dirt up there because of the inner fender.
I would recommend a pre-filter...altho I still have not ordered mine
a great bonus to this intake is you can run it in "Short Ram Style" if your somewhere really dirty or it's winter and there is a lot of water on the ground and the temps are cold.
Doing this is nice cause you can keep the filter in the engine compartment where it is a little cleaner and warmer in the winter...bonus!!!
From a pdf at the site:
EaA Cleaning Instructions: Every year or 25,000 miles or as required
• Carefully remove filter from the housing. Clean the housing with a shop towel being careful not to knock contaminants into the air inlet.
• Cleaning can be done by two methods:
1. Vacuum Cleaning: Place the filter on a flat surface and carefully vacuum the filter media on the dirty side where the incoming airflow
enters the filter. Be careful not to rub the filter pleats with the vacuum cleaner attachment too aggressively as this may damage the
filter. Using a vacuum with too much suction may damage the filter.
2. Shop Air Cleaning: Hold the filter with one hand and carefully blow the filter media at a 45-degree angle on the clean side of the filter
using low-pressure (15 to 20 psi) shop air. Be careful not to rub the filter pleats with the air nozzle as this may damage the filter.
Using too high of air pressure will damage the filter media.
• Reinstall the filter into the air filter housing and secure.

Have done it. 25000 miles of interstate driving and it is whipped---last one for me
how did you determine that is was "bad"??
you can run a AFE filter(dry or oiled) with this intake set-up if you don't like Amsoil filters.......
it was pulling the filter minder down before and after i cleaned it (vacumed it the first cleaning --blew out with compressed air second cleaning). replaced it with the original OEM filter and minder has not pulled down again.

I know what you mean about burning the coal buddy!!
