HID Headlight Conversion kits

I met with a Shop owner the other day, he has an HID cionversion kit available that he feel he can install for about 7-800$ Cdn. it basically includes the transformers or ballasts, and wiring and a set of replacement bulbs. He fels about 2 hours labor to install. I have not sen a Godge done yet, I did see a F350 with the conversion installed . We discussed that conversions performance, and he said it was awesome, escpecialy in the mountains. He mentioned about 40% of the oncoming traffic flashed him, which is understandable, as your normal European or High end American car with the system has barely half the reflective area in their lights. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this system and if so werer their any problems? I understand there may be some issues with the dodge wiring and daytime running lights that some diodes may have to be installed I did talk with one fellow shortly who did have them and they at that time wired them into his factory fog light switch. Any replies would be welcome

Thanks guys!!

my problem is that HID retrofit kits are not designed for our headlight housings. HID uses a special reflector and what not to properly project the light. By throwing these bulbs in a headlight housing, its not quite how its supposed to be. I also am not to sure if its DOT legal

I totally agree! If you really want to do it, Xenon HID conversion kits are on sale at ebay every day for ~$200-400.
Cheers

I really need something besides these stock headlamps, they are horrible at night on the back roads and country roads. Do the xenon HID kits include a new housing ?? That is the only thing that has kept me from buying a kit, most people say when just replacing the bulb and not the reflector, they dont work right.

I have HID's. They work fine and illuminate better than stock. The only thing is they couldn't get it to work on the factory light switch (after MANY hours of working on it). They ended putting it on a dedicated toggle switch.

How do you like the conversion compared to stock ?? I am thinking about getting one of these kits, but didn't know if it was worth the money or not. Also, do you have high and low beams with this setup ??

What bulb # do we have? I know on my Ferd I just swapped out the bulbs (9007). I have a brand new set and might try them if we do have 9007 type.

I added factory fog lights to my '03 SLT. One of the best mods for the money!

I've tried the aftermarket bulbs and they dont really make that much difference, maybe a little. These lights on these trucks from the factory are horrible.

Unless they changed them on the 3rd Gen trucks you have a 9004.

I like them, they do a better job...but I wouldn't say they're AMAZING. They do make the truck look pretty nice though, that's a plus. When I bought my set, the luxury of having both low beam and high beam HID was VERY new and VERY pricey. I just have regular low beams. However, the price on the Bi's should have gone down by now. I don't ever really NEED the High Beams though....but that of course is for MY application. Not sure what kind of areas you'll be in.

I'm considering the projected headlamp kit and pop the HID's in those...not sure what kind of results I'd get...that's the only reason I'm hesitant about it.

Bi-Xenon Kits for out trucks are about $400 on Ebay. Just search for Bi-Xenon 9007 and you will find the kits.

I have put HID kits in my camaro's before and they work Awesome. But I have yet to put one in my 3rd Gen. I will be soon though.

If you decide to go with HID's I recommend 6000K or 8000K Color Temp. 6000K is as close to Sunlight as you will get and for those who like a little blue tint to your headlamps go with the 8000's.

My personal preferance is the 8000's.

Ohhh Yeah... 9007 is the 3rd Gen Bulb number. Not 9004. 9004 was Second Gen.

Have you guys tried replacing with Silvania Silverstars in both your Main Headlamps and your Driving lights? I did and it helps.. Not a miracle by any means but it does help if you don't want to spend the $400 on a conversion HID set.

Not to mention that your Headlamps will look soooo much different than your driving lights.

Its a little more than not quiet, the HID bulbs cause allot of stray light and when put into a normal housing it end up projecting allot of light much higher than it supposed to and the end result it like driving with high beams on. At the very least you will get a ticket for defective equipment or at the very worst blind someone on a two lane road and you and they have a head-on collision. It’s not worth taking the cheap route.

BUT if you want to do it right you can get a HID projector off eBay like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HELLA...ayphotohosting

I used a projector like this to convert my 01 4runner to HID, all you do is cut a hole in the back of the stock headlights and mount the HID projector and then readjust the lights. The HID projectors have a servo mounted shutter that controls high and low beams.

It’s actually an easy conversion and it projects the light allot better than just a retrofit bulb. The light is projected better in front and of course there is no stray light.

The projector HID's are the way to go. The stock housing has lots of light it just goes everywhere because of the open exposure to the turn signal lights (poor focus). The cheap set up is to put 100 watt high 65 watt low bulbs in and get a set of headlight covers that only allow a circle of light. I have my twin 55's wired into my high beams so that I don't have any problem at night on the high beams. I'm going to install my fogs into my bumper to have them run on the low beams with upgraded bulbs. Or you could get an 06 front clip and install those lights as they are way better. ks

The reason 40% of the people were flashing the driver of the HID conversion truck is that the super-bright light is being scattered by the mismatched housing/reflector.

If you MUST have HID, the PROPER way to do it is either with a complete headlight module (designed FOR your vehicle by a MAJOR manufacturer like Hella) or an add-on light.

Add on lights are almost always the better option. Check out the Hella Rally 4000 Motorsport HID and the Lightforce 240 Blitz HID. They are the standard in off-road racing.

If you have the coin, another REALLY nice option is a SolTek light bar from Baja Designs. www.bajadesigns.com
