when i was removing the rockers to do the studs, i didnt pay attention to which way the arm that presses the springs, go back on. i know the direction, but on the bottom side of the arms that go on top of the springs, the 2 holes are different sizes. which way do they go?

OK, im getting desperate. the first person willing to go out right now and take the valve cover off their 3 gen, take a picture of the last 3 rocker assemblies so i can see the arms that go on top of the springs clearly, and post the pictures, i will paypal $50 to them. but i need it asap as i am trying to finish up tonight. its 11:00 pm now, ill give it till 12:30am, then the $50 goes out the window

are you referring to the bridges? they span across the valve stems? if so, no need to worry, they are not direction specific. the wholes are elongated on one side to allow for movement

they look like they would be specific though, if i set in it in one way the part that touches the rocker is moved further over than if were to do it the other way.

The manual states to note which direction they come off. My guess is that is mainly because they are a wear item just as any other part in the valve train. If that is not the case, and they are supposed to face a certain direction because of design layout, I would be surprised since I have pulled engines apart numerous times that the crossheads were mixed up on. The crosshead has a dot on one end that denotes whether or not it has the elongated slot. I have seen them facing both directions.

If one direction looks better than the other, use it. Personally, I wouldn't sweat it

if it were something that if it were worng and not do too much damage i wouldnt worry about it, but the valves, that scares me if they are supposed to go in a certain way, and i didnt do it that way.

I agree. I've done head gaskets on several 24 valve engines, and have noted that the crossheads seem to have the dot facing in completely random directions. I haven't found any logical direction they need to face, and have just laid everything out in order so they all go back in exactly the same place. However, I don't believe it would be the end of the world if some were switched around.

My personal truck, being a 12 valve, wouldn't be of much use to you in a photograph. (also, it's -25 degrees out right now ;) )

Ya it dosent matter witch way they go, i just try to put them all the same way.

All the heavy truck engines I have torn down the bigger hole on the bridge points to the exhaust side. Like Lmills said, the manual does not specify which side but I have noticed the big hole is always on the exhaust side on a "virgin" engine. I have also seen a lot of N-14s come in mixed up and it did not appear to make them run different.

Thanks for the help fellas, i actually found a wear patter to them and going off the ones i knew how came out, figured out how to get them all back in the way they came out. can you tell how worried i was about it..lol but thanks again!

What kind of studs did you use?

i went with ARP, the regular ones
