handshakin tips

for those of you with 6 speeds on the qurter mile or the eighth, what tips do you have for shifting? My problem isnt the act of shifting, almost every car/truck i have ever had has been a manual. I need to know how to get it into gear better. 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th feels like the shifter is bending cause im pushing so hard to no avail, and 3rd to 4th and 5th to 6th will go, but it grinds. I think the Dual Disk doesnt help much here, but I need all the help I can get against guys who can leave the line with boost.

I don't think there's much you can do. Now that I have a DD it will only go into gear when IT wants to. All I can do is apply pressure with the shifter and it will engauge when IT wants to. Its definetly slower shifting when compared to stock but thats just the nature of the beast.

I went racing once with my 6 speed and it was a waste. I got a good speed 98mph but crappy ET 14.7 I'll leave all the fun of drag racing for the auto guys, and save my nice diesel tow rig for everything else.

Is this your daily driver, or race only? Do you have a spare trans?
There is an old trick that used to be done on Muncie Rock Crushers,M21/M22's that some of the six speed guys are doing, mostly competition only trucks but some of the guys are running them on the street to.
It involves taking every other ear off the syncros, and then tapering the opening of the syncro rings so you can basicly just stuff it into gear and it will go, with or without the clutch.

thats a good idea, but yeah, its my daily driver. And i can't really go with anything less than a DD, cause i got about 600 to the wheels now and im planning alot more.

My '06 with a 3250 DD is slow to drive in traffic for this very reason. However, I tend to double-clutch every shift, and synchronize to just let things drop in gear. It's a little slower, but really saves the synchronizers and is easier on everything.

However, when I really need to get through the gears, it'll do that to. I'm not sure really how to explain... There's kindof a fine line of how high you can rev and how you begin backing off the throttle a split second before you jam into the next gear. Staying into the throttle a split second too long and the rpm "hangs" to long to grab the next gear lightning fast. I think alot depends on your particular setup and how you're fueling the truck.

I generally try to be nice to my truck...but after a little practice, I can shift quick enough to bark rubber on the 3 - 4 shift with 37's and a laggy SPS66 turbo...

teheheh... good luck... BRC is a mofo. I worked down at EWTGPAC (Unit that runs BRC) doing fire support instruction for 0861's, NGLO's, and MAGTF Fires Courses. But now I'm out here in Oki :( 4 months and counting!
