I've heard good things about the Nelson and/or Donaldson mufflers.

An MBRP muffler would definitely "open the sound up some", but you may or may not like the way it sounds. At first I hated the way mine sounded, then I either got used to it or learned to like it.

I have the Magnaflow. They come in at least 2 sizes all of which is the straight through design. I love the deep sound that comes out of mine when I mash the pedal.

I have the Dynomax Bullet Race Muffler 4" in/out straight through flow and it sounds awesome . Deepens the exhaust tone but takes away that raspy rice burner sound that I got when I was straightpiped.

Plus it's cheap......around $40 bucks

where do you buy the dynomax at, and did you put an adapter from 3 1/2 to 4" before it?

Thumbs up westport

I bought my muffler from JEGS Performance. Here's the part #289-24217. It measures 5" diameter and 16 1/2" long. The current price according to their website is $37.99 plus shipping.

Yes I bought a 3 1/2" to 4" adapter from a local big rig parts shop for $11.00 bucks.

I have a 4040L AERO TURBINE muffler. The 4040 stands for 4" in and 4" out. The "L" indicates that this is the long muffler with the built in resinator. This muffler is all stainless and I beleive has a life time warranty. You can buy just the 4040 model but it will be a little louder. The 4040L I have is not much loader then stock and sound is great plus gives extra HP. It is loader if you have a heavy load on or hammer the pedal to the floor. Check out their web site, they have sound clips you can listen to. I beleive the site is www.aeroturbine.com

For the 2003, upgrade rthe exhaust to a 4" system with straight through perforated muffler such as our Diamond Eye kits and install an Aeroturbine as far forward in the system as poosible, ie: right on the down pipe. The sound is deep and no drone.

Well I tell you what, I had aproximately 50,000 miles on the truck when I straight piped it. I know it is not always correct, but the overhead indicated 17.9 mpg prior to the straight pipe. After the straight pipe it read 17.4 but I feel that I was hammering it more often just to hear her rumble through town etc. This lasted for about 12,000 miles before I went with the magnaflow for my wife refused to ride with me for long trips because it was so loud. Since the Magnaflow, and another 10,000 miles later the overhead currently reads 18.2-18.4 depending on my heavy foot. The only difference was one bottle of "tune-up-in-a-bottle" from your local O'Reiley's for $3.25 that I put in about 5,000 miles ago.

Hand Calculated I am getting almost 20 mpg, but it should be said that my communte to work is 35 miles highway at an average of 65-70 mph. I use my truck for work and it is not unheard of that I will drive 160 miles a day, 90% highway, before returning home. Needless to say I drive 2,500-3,500 miles a month.

I did a lot of research on this muffler, MBRP, Flowmaster, Nelson/Donaldson, and others before I put the Magnaflow on. I had not heard it having any adverse effects, it was all nominal to slight increase. Performance may have given me a slight hp increase in regular driving conditions. Also, I don't feel that it does much, but I do have a 5" tip as well. I have no other mods except the AirAid drop in air filter.

For the most part, this is a personal preference issue and how much you are willing to spend. I am very satisfied with my set up. My $.02.

Exhaust Drone

I installed a aero-turbo 4040L with Magnaflow muffler. The drone nearly bursts my ear drums

NONE, love the way it sounds. I straight piped mine and saved the money. May be too loud for some people though.

That's funny, I have the aeroturbINE 4040L with no drone whatsoever. If a 4040L with muffler is too loud for you, you should probably try a non-straight-thru muffler design like the stock one. I received more positive comments on the sound of my truck around town, at the fuel station, doing errands than I ever expected.

Taking the advice of another, I wrapped my whole system with header wrap tape from Jegs. Cut down on in-cab decibels significantly and absolutely no drone. The only noise is out the tailpipe.
