Fuel mileage while towing

I'm about to make a run from Massachusetts to Key West, FL. and back, and with the price of fuel so high, I am interested in good mileage while towing a 10,000lb 5er.

I just mailed in my Xzillaraider XZT tow and had it upgraded to the Xzillaraider 2 XZT.

Does anyone know if I used a Quad boost fooler alone with my Xzillaraider 2 XZT, would it help my mileage while towing?

How about adding a RokkTek to this mix, would that help mileage while towing?

I have a Quad boost fooler and the XZT X2. I have towed with the boost fooler in place with the box and did not get any better mileage on the trip we took. In fact I am going to list the boost fooler for sale here sometime the week. I bought it new for a trip we took pulling the 5th wheel while I was having my box updated so it is basically new. Don't know if the RokkTek would do anything or not.

Our 5th wheel is right at 10k and I get anywhere from 10 mpg to 13 mpg. I get 10 at 68 mph and 13 at 60 mph. The slower you run the better you are going to get.

What are you asking for the fooler? Send me a PM.

That mileage isn't too good, I got 11.5 on last years trip and I have a hard time keeping it under 75.

I tow about 13k 5er on a 856 miles one way from Houston to Angel Fire New Mexico. In 2006 without my XZT I got 10 mpg. In 2007 9.9 mpg with XZT towing at 65mph. Not much if any difference but the power sure is nice.

Air the tires to the max and drive slow for better mpg

Your Quad box already boost fools and that's why there is no difference when running it.
You have to slow down Al or your mileage is not going to go up. I know that's a long drive. I was down there this past Spring.........

Lower profile of your truck (2wd is oboviously better), slowing down (magic happy spot for my truck is about 63 MPH), better gear ratio (Changing out for the better overdrive gears, dropping RPMs), #2 diesel (more BTUs per gallon over winter weight), 2 wd drive (less weight to more, fewer moving parts, lower profile) and skinny tires w/maxed out air pressure (less rolling friction). Really the ways to get better mileage. I don't think that boxes give you much in the way of better mileage, having 3 diesels now, 3 different types of tuners, and no significant increase on the MPG (but more power!!)

I called Tech Support yesterday and was advised to download the Max Mileage update and that it enabled boost fooling. Also advised adding another boost fooler wouldn't add anymore boost. Wouldn't give me anymore power or help with mileage.

I still would like to know if adding a Rokk Tec would help mileage. I know if I call them they will say add one. Does anyone have any info on advancing my timing with the Max Mileage Mod?

Thanks Everyone

Alcorr, I have made the exact trip you are going to take, once I got into Va. on 95 where there were no real hills, I averaged 14-14.2 mpg going 65-68 mph, with 4:10 axle ratio, fuel economy drops off real quick above 70 mph for my truck. I have a standard Quad xzt and my 5ver is just under 15k loaded. Where are you staying down there?

Personelly I think you are waisting your time with a Roktekk, your Quad advances timing already, both might adversely affect your fuel economy.

Yes.

It may lower your EGT's but can increase cylinder pressures and heat. Towing can multiply the effect.

Thanks Guys, Looks like I'll be pass on the Rokk Tec also.

I'm booked for 3 weeks at KOA Sugarloaf Key, it's about 15-20 miles from Key West, Best part is the hot tubs open all night and you can bring your own beverage with you.
