Well I finally cut the old exhaust off and put my 4" downpipe on and ran 4" out to the stock tail pipe. I was not sure if I would need a muffler or not, but now I am sure I need a little something to quiet it down a little. When on the throttle, this thing is louder than my 95 Ram with the headers ans 3" pipe with no muffler !! I like the turbo sound along with the big rig sound, but it has too much "ricer" sound to it at high rpms. Need to tone it down a little so those *^%#'s don't think I am trying to be like them. I read a while back about some muffler comparisons, but can't find the right now. What is a good one that will sound better than stock, flow better, but not be soo loud ? Thanks



BTW I can't believe how quick this thing spools up the turbo when while doing 50 mph I hit the throttle. It shoots up to 22lbs quicker than ever.

 

Im interested in this also. Ive heard good things about the Donaldson mufflers.

 

Anybody have any luck with aeroturbine mufflers? They make some pretty big claims.

I just went to straight pipe because my aftermarket muffler had a rattle that drove me nuts when I had the windows down. No problem all winter. The straight pipe is a little raspy at idle, but really not too bad at highway speed. Really hear the drone at 1500-1700 RPMs. We'll see how it is towing next week!

 

I run the Donaldson and love it , actually didnt even listen to the stereo for a month so I could just listen to the exhaust I have some picture in my gallery. I am using the 41 in straight thru flow 4 in. # 85171 , not loud or quiet , and no drone .

 

I put the 51" Nelson muffler on my 04.5. I bought it from Cummins Atlantic for $79 and had a muffler shop install it for $30. It is a little louder, but the main thing is reduced EGT and the turbo's quicker spool-up.

41 donaldson is awesome and no baffle in it like the 51".

 

My 51" (86131M) Nelson does not have a baffel. I could look in one side and see out the other.

 

The Aeroturbine 4040L which has a small built in resonator should do a nice job for you. It needs to be installed as far forward in the system as possible to kill the drone and get the most performance out of it. Ignore the mileage claims by Aeroturbine, there probably won't be much gain over the 4" exhaust already ont he truck. What the Aeroturbine is good for is cooling EGTs and sound control.

 

I was considering a muffler or the aeroturbine just to cut down on the drone when I removed the muffler. I would consider trying a stainless tip before you put a muffler on the truck. I had planned on going with a tip with the resonator built in, but due to the budget, went with a Meps stainless tip from Geno's. This is the 4 inch version that just slides on the pipe without a clamp or welding. I was surprised at how much this tip actually cut the drown down. The only time I can hear the truck is when I am passing a solid barrier and have the rear passenger window down. For 40 bucks if it doesn't quiet it down enough at least the exhaust pipe looks good.

 

I put on the pretty chrome down turn, but it's still pretty loud. Where did you find a baffled tip? That's what I had originally planned but then couldn't find one.
