A few 48RE trans related questions....
I've got an '06 with 48,000 miles on it now. I've tried lots of different power modules and I guess my trans is finally about to go. I've got it in stock form now with the exception of a GDP-392 competition fuel system, 5" turbo back exhaust, and an aFe Stage 2 intake. Any time I am just driving around and punch it the truck will just rev up and after I back off it'll catch and go on. I'm guessing that my trans is about to take a dump. Any clue as to what it is? TQ, bands, etc? What kind of ballpark price am I looking at if I want to put in a TQ, VB, and a flexplate as well as anything else needed due to my occasional "thrashing"? Would these mods be enough to support a Smarty SR? I'm sure there are going to be other things that need replacing once the guys tear into the tranny. I'm just trying to figure out how much $$$ and what it'll take to support the power I'm looking at.

Well the short answer is that if you have problems now... you can't just get a TC and VB and expect it to be fixed. If you get a heavy duty Goerends with a billet input and a flexplate expect mid $5k. Billet shafts throughout will add another $1.5k.

I would do a whole trans deal, oh wait... I did. Now I don't have to worry about spending more $$ in the long run. It is done and I have peace of mind. If you are slipping now, it is more than likely the TC is shot... as it goes you mess up the internal clutches too... just do the whole thing.

That's probably what I'll do. In most cases, when you try to save a little money, it turns around and bites you in the long run. The peace of mind is something worth having for sure.

Mine was doin the same thing, until it wouldnt even catch long enough to give it some fuel. In my opinion, just a TC and VB wont fix it, the clutches are probably well on their way out already due to heat from the slippage. Thats what Im thinking happened to mine. So Im going full replacement. I was quoted a little over 6700 for an HTS with billet input, intermediate, and output shafts, TC, VB, flexplate, everything, and that includes shipping of the new one and my core back. Now I just gotta order the dang thing...cant wait!!

****, almost 7 grand for a transmission. Id rather keep the truck stock and buy a used LS1 camaro/firebird for 7 grand and run 12's all day long stock. Why are they so much? I had a stout chevy 700r4 built for 1500, it held lots of power. Are the parts just that expensive?

Yeah, i know what you mean. But still, 7000 will buy you a sweet car. Id rather have that then a transmission.....
It seems like huge news when a cummins runs 12's or 11's. I can run that for 8 grand total, including the price of the car. Besides the novelty of "it can be done" it really is pointless. Save the cummins for towing the race car, not BEING the race car. I have HUGE respect for the fast trucks here, but its not my thing. I just hate to see thousands and thousands of dollars being spent on things like transmissions. I was raised different i guess. |
Mine was pulling that same trick ... with a aftermarket vb and tq in it. Turned out the "kickdown cable" had broken somehow??? Less than $200 later beating her hard again with no problems. May be worth looking at in the short term. I was going to trade mine in due to being 1000+ mile from home and not having time to wait for broken crap when I had similar symtoms happen. Back on the road again cheap for me anyway... for now. Long run I know she will break .... but hopefully after they fix the 6.7 issues so I can trade it off to the dealer who made me unhappy in the past[guitar][guitar] Goes around.....[whistle]

My OEM T/C was slipping on a regular bases, so I purchased a Goerends V/B, tripple disc T/C and a BD Flex Plate. I'm hoping this will fix the problem. I couldn't afford the whole Goerends tranny and I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me.
