Exhaust Question Cat back or Turbo Back
Exhaust Question Cat back or Turbo Back
I only plan on having 2 mods to my truck, intake which I bought about a month ago (AFE Stage 2) and an exhaust. I have read up a little on the size of the exhaust and since i'm only doing light mods I assume a 4" good flowing exhaust will be the best, unless I read wrong. My questions is do I want turbo back or cat back, I am not interested in having an overwhelming drone inside the cab as my wife drives the rig more than I do (dont ask) and the whine of the turbo after the intake upgrade is about the wife's limits nosie wise, although i have to admit it does sound like a jet taking off around 2500 rpm's. What suggestions do you guys have? I am not really into racing but I like to have a little power if needed for those pesky WRX's.

I acually had more drone with the cat on, but as bad as these emmisions laws are getting, keeping it on might save some trouble in the future. 4" will do just fine, and you can get a kit from mbrp that perfectly replaces the stock muffler.
The stock exhaust is good for 600 hp and if you want more flow the MBRP drop in replacement muffler is great, no drone. Yet a bigger system, 5" will flow even more, but if your wife hates the sound of a louder exhaust, then your best bet is just to replace the muffler.
An MBRP drop in is what I'm running, not much more than stock, I wish it had more bark than it does. Maybe after a couple months it'll get meaner sounding, and O'h yeah, my cat lost it's guts too.
Exhaust and air intake
My truck would barely hit 21 on the overhead in stock form. Removed the factory air box with the BHAF and intake tube kit which was far cheaper than any aftermarket airbox along with a muffler delete and free flowing cat - now the overhead reads 24.4 when using the cruise on the highway. Truck seems totally different in the amount of pedal to maitain speed.
I can't wait to take an actual calculated reading - I am hoping for 18 mpg on the highway, before I was 16.

The biggest gain of removing your cat is not going to be HP or MPG it's going to be the reduction in EGTs, there was a right up in the month before last Diesel Power or Diesel World that showed everything your asking except mpg. HP increase was minimal and the EGT decrease was huge.
