Exhaust Next.
Next door to the shop spraying in a liner today, was the muffler/brake shop that put duals on my last truck (5.9 Gas). So, I went over and inquired about my new diesel.
They said that they could "cut my old muffler, replace it with a performance muffler and then run 4" pipe to same location," for about $150. They also have the option of putting a big 6" SS tip on it for another $100. This seems like a pretty good price (not the tip) ....I know its pretty easy work, but someone else is doing it, with their equip. and guaranteeing their workmanship. $150 doesn't seem like a bad deal unless I'm missing something, which is why I'm posting here.
What I want; a little more noise, not annoying loud, but the stock system is just way too civilized for me. I'm used to the duals/glasspacks on my 5.9 gas. I don't necessarily want it that loud, I want to be able to talk in the cab, but I want that nice, throaty, diesel sound from my exhaust. The engine noise is great and the turbo sounds good now, but there is no real sound coming from the stock exhaust.
What I'm considering; buying a less restrictive muffler OR AeroTurbine and taking it to them and having them replace the stock muffler, no fancy tip.
My questions: Leave the CAT on OR put the aeroturbine in its place, then straightpiped out.
Leave the CAT and just replace the stock muff. with something
thanks,
daniel

Question:
If I leave the CAT on and put the 4040 (not 4040L) RIGHT behind the cat, and straight-pipe the rest, will I get the sound I want without annoying drone? I can get the 4040 really cheap right now, but not the 4040L.
thanks,
daniel

How about this? Do you think If I supply the Aeroturbine 4040 and give this to the local exhaust shop, they will weld it together for me and do you think I'll get the sound I want from this set-up?

From what I have read on other posts, the CAT and Aeroturbine together will give you exactly what you are looking for.....more throaty sound without being glasspack loud when you stomp on it. I have also read in here somewhere that losing the Cat will gain you some get up and go.....but it is illegal!
I, personally, made sure I took good care of my Cat when I took it off....in case I have to re-install it some day.

dgm,
If you want a drop in performance muffler we have an MBRP part that is designed specifically for the 2004.5 + trucks. It has welded hangers and just slips in place of your stock muffler, it's the same as the standard MBRP muffler just a little shorter. Sound wise it'll be pretty stock until you floor it, then you'll hear it! It has welded hangers that reuse the stock hangers and is built form 409 stainless like the stock system is. We also have 304 polished tips at a whole lot less than the price you mentioned and they just bolt on too.

....even with the 4040 as opposed to the 4040L.... no drone in the cab, when installed like this?
Also, will any additional 4" pipe need to be put in. The 4040 appears to be alot shorter than the muffler I'll be taking out.
thanks,
daniel
dgm,
Lets say little to no drone in the cab when either Aeroturbine is installed as far forward as possible. I do think that the 4040L with its resonator does a little better job than the 4040, but it may be it is just a little quiter. Either one if mounted forward should yield good results and keep the drone away. The 4040 is what we have on the 04 in our shop and it does not drone at all with the 4040 mounted directly on the DP.
The 4040 is only 20" long tip to tip, so it is much shorter than the muffler you will be taking out. That is why you need the offset pipe to make up for the length and elevation changes from the stock muffler.

Car_nut,
Can I order just the 409L SS off-set pipe with three plated clamps and support hanger from you? I've actually already got the 4040, so I don't need the whole kit.
thanks,
daniel
