exhaust mods?

I have read a lot of hype about 4" being the minimum for exhaust size on upgrades that produce less than 450 horse. It appears as though my 04 came from the factory with 4". What would be the benefit of replacing it with an aftermarket 4"? My first upgrades will be the "whistler" intake I have read so much about on this forum and secondly an exhaust upgrade. I am even thinking about a muffler delete if I get enough recommendations. Any thoughts?

youll have to look and see which eng you have the late or 04.5 does already have 4inch exh. all you need to do is find a good flow tru muffler or run a muffler delete pipe.

The stock muffler is the problem....replace it with a Donaldson or Nelson....available at most prof. truck parts stores....it is available in 28 to 48 inch muffler bodies....I have a brand new 4" on hand but shipping is the killer. ks

loose the muff

Best move i made was getting 5in exhaust. Like abc4yew said get a good muffler dont straight pipe it you will hate it,[duhhh] and mine runs beter with a muffler!:o

Not that price is a huge concern, I have read threads from other forum members who stated the $450.-$500. bucks they spent on a 5" system netted less than 10hp improvement. Most were happy with the sound it created but didn't notice HUGE gains, but if I order a 5" system I have to consider shipping costs. Some vendors treat Alaska as another country when figuring shipping costs. It all comes down to bang for the buck! From the insight a lot of you have shared I might start with a free flowing 4" muffler, see what improvements I notice and go from there.

I went to a diesel shop bought the pipe and elbow put it on for around $150:00 not to bad [coffee]

Alaskaworktruck 04-10-2007 04:59 PM

are you talking about a by-pass pipe and a elbow for the off-set for $150.?

MOJO1 04-10-2007 05:03 PM

I bought a 10 foot stick and elbow reducer down pipe back.

You should be able to just put in a 4" peice of straight pipe.. It will change the angle of your tip but no biggie.. I've done that before...

Go to ryderfleetproducts.com and find the nelson or donaldson muffler. I think they have a special on shipping right now. But I can't remember.. It cost me $25 to have mine shipped and it was 51" long and 5".

I got mine at Freightliner in PHX and they brought it in from LA - no delivery cost. Craig

Just got a call back from the local speed shop he can get me a 4in/4out MBRP in a week no "additional shipping", he says. With the price I've seen on-line and his quoted price there is a $60-$70. difference, I would venture a guess to say that would pretty much cover the freight. Oh well, everybody need to make a living. Placed the order yesterday also for all the "Whistler" intake parts.
