Unhappy DSS - 185 ft.lbs ?

I am trying to install the DSS kit on my truck. It states to torque the NEW pitman arm nut to 185 Ft.Lbs. Unfortunately, I do not have a deep socket to fit that new nut that the kit comes with. I called Auto Zone, Napa, Sears and Ace and NOBODY carries one that deep.

I am figuring to just use an 1 1/4" wrench and tighten it down as best as I can. Mark it and watch if it starts to come loose.

How would one even torque that 185 ft.lbs without some type of impact gun??

Leverage.

You can hit 140ftlbs pretty easy with a torque wrench due to the length.
Try a jack handle for a cheater bar.

Not the same nut, but when I reinstalled my stocker after replacing the pitman arm for my lift, I just hit it with an impact, hasnt loosened up at all.

I think I will do the same. I have a large 1 1/4" open-ended wrench and I will put some leverage (my leg) on it and tighten it. I will mark it and check it later to see if it loosens...

A large adjustable wrench...or a box end is EASY to hit 185 with your foot against the tire.

If your pitman arm has been on for a while it won't come off regardless of whether the nut is on or off anyways...lol.

I just emailed you back and suggested the exact same thing lol!!

Just use a cheater pipe as without it, you have to "jerk"( ) the wrench, and with the pitman shaft moving it's hard to get it really tight. With the pipe you can slowly crank it down good...

I just supported myself with foot to tire and pulled without a cheater bar. I probably overtorqued it. I haven't even had it cross my mind until seeing this thread and I'm not going to check it either.

Do the cheater and add a bit of loc tight. It won't come off. If your really worried about it, you can drill it and use safety wire. this is required to run a motorcylce on track. it would serve same purpose...

Good luck.

I used a large adjustable wrench....185 is pretty easy with a 14-18" wrench or so. with a pipe, you are probably over torquein

Yeah, with an 18" wrench you would need just under 125 lbs of pressure to get to 185lb-ft. Wedge yourself in good and start cranking.
