super 40 turbo?

found a web sight today w/ loads of turbo parts called them and they were real friendly. one question though they told me they had a turbo called super 40 that bolt rite onto our trucks and give a good upgrade of boost and lower egt's. and the turbo was really cheap, then i asked them about a bht3b turbo and they priced that for over 200 dollars less than the super 40. has anyone heard of the super 40 or used it, even if i bought it it sounded like i coulb bolt the 3b to it later and have a strong twin setup for under 1500.00 bucks

p.s. i can pm prices if anyone wants to know i heard not to do it on here.

any info would be great

The Holset Super HX-40 has been out now about a year. They are built better than the standard HX-40, they can take higher boost and also have a wider "map" along with a higher pressure ratio than the standard HX-40's.

Both my son and I have used the standard HX-40/16's and have had very good luck with them! My son is using a Piers HX-40/16 as the top charger in his Scheid Twin Turbo System on his 2004 Dodge CTD CR Pickup and has had no problems with it there either. IMO,.....if you use it as a single and keep the boost to around 40-45lbs. the turbo will give you good service and relibility. And you are right, the Holset Super 40 would be a good top charger ina twin set-up with the Holset HT3B.

Hope this has helped you some.

is the 40/16 a good rule of thumb or would a 40/12, 40/14 work that way too for faster spool up?

You are very welcome on the reply!

IMO,.....the reason you haven't seen many people post on this turbo is because I do not feel there is alot of people running them. FWIW,....a few years ago, the older model Holset HX-40's got a "bad rap" as many of them failed due to guys running them with WAY TOO MUCH boost; 45-50+lbs.!
But, as I said above, if you run them "within their specs" (36-43lbs) they will give you good service. Piers Harry (former owner of "Piers Diesel Research")
originally "pioneered" the upgrades for the early HX-40's to include: modified center bearing oil gallery, modified exhaust housing for better spool-up and larger "flappers" on the wastegates for the twin turbo HX-40's. IMO,...these modifications helped the HX-40 turbos become much more reliable for us!

You asked about the exhaust housing sizes, 12, 14 or 16cm?? IMO,.....a 12cm housing is too small on the HX-40. They just get too hot. The 14cm exhaust housing is O.K. if you do alot of heavy towing or like alot of bottom end takeoff with your truck. But,.....I still think the HX-40 with the 16cm housing is the best combination for "all around" use in a single application. You will have somewhat more lag off the bottom over a 14cm exhaust housing but IMo it is not enough to be concerned about. I tried an HX-40 with the 18cm housing and can tell you the takeoff was TERRIBLE! That was on my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve with an automatic transmission.

One other reason why I think more guys aren't using the HX-40, or newer "Super" HX-40/16 is because of the fact that companies like Industrial Injection and HTT have come up with the Phat Shaft 62/12, 62/14, 64/12 line of turbos which seem more popular right now. However, while being very good turbos, they are much more expensive than the HX-40's are.

Hope this has helped you out some more "emfc_22." Good luck to you on your choice.
