Did my tone ring mod today..
You can see what's on my truck in my sig. Everything is just as most guys claim. A little more pep on the bottom end but nothing spectacular. The engine seems to run a bit smoother now too. I can get the truck to spin the tires a little bit with the box turned off which it would never do. I also noticed that sometimes it chirps second gear just a tad if I hit it just right. I noticed no problems with excess rattle even with the Quad box on the Race setting. I got my EGTs up to almost 1300 which I think is a little higher than I had seen previously.
Now to go through a tank of fuel to see if I gain anything. I started putting Power Service in my tank last week and my mileage has already gone up from 15-15.5 to exactly 16 when I filled up today so I'm already happy. I put some in a few weeks ago and had one tank where I got 18 mpg. I have no idea what caused that though. I started using the PS/MMO mix today also so any gains I get now may be partially attributed to the mix. Who cares, as long as it works!!!
Initially I was unimpressed and actually upset because the truck seemed slower and wouldn't make hardly any smoke even on the race setting. I decided to loosen the bolts and back it off a little and discovered that I had turned the ring all the way to one side as per the instructions on the long topic, but like the dummy I am I had spun it backwards and actually retarded it more. While I was drilling the hole out I had opened up the other side of the hole too. Anyways, I have it right now and all seems well. I will post back with my mileage observation in a few days.
If anyone cares, I was able to do this today because I have my birthday off. (Hint Hint) The big 40 today!!! WOW! Where did all the time go??????
Later
BTW, thanks to all the guys who tested this out so the rest of us didn't have to be guinea pigs..

Always nice doing FREE mods. And it only takes about 20 minutes, unless you put it the wrong way the first time
But 15 minutes later (since you know what needs to be done from the 1st time) and you are good to go.

Hoss, you behind the 8ball on this one?
Basically, it is doing about the same thing as the RokkTech Cam sensor. Behind the Crank Pulley there is a Tone Ring (looks like a chain sprocket). It has 4 bolt holes and a dowel pin hole. Take off the belt, loosen up the crank pulley and you will see how loose that is, it wiggles a little. If you are in front and looking at the motor, it needs to turn CLOCKWISE a tad. This will advance the timing a little bit. So, what people are starting to do is to take OFF that tone ring gear and grind out the dowel pin. Not to enlarge it but to slot it a little. It needs to be done on the CCW side (if having the dowel pin at NOON position, slot to the left). Then upon installing, it will now turn CW just some more. Even if you slot too much, the 4 bolt holes will stop it from going too far.
People have noticed a little increase in MPG (me, about 1.5 - 3 around town) and better take off power. I went from stock tires (265) to 315's and lost power of course. This mod feels like I am back to stock power AND getting better MPG also.
Now, not saying that the ROKKTECH sensor doesn't work (don't have one) and you shouldn't think about getting that. But this is a free mod that takes about 20 minutes, maybe less if you let the motor cool down first. Crank Pulley is hot after shutting down the motor

Hmmm...interesting. I'm in the process of reading a very long thread about this...something about a camshaft sensor?? It sounds interesting. Must learn more.
Basically, we're just talking about advancing the timing a few degrees, right? Does that hurt anything?

You are correct. Just advances the timing a little. I don't think it will hurt anything but some people have been searching about this since they are running Timing Boxes compared to just Fueling boxes.
I hear the RokkTech adjustable timing sensor does work with some boxes.

Hey Hoss,
I have an 04 (555). I tried the ROKK sensor. I seemed like it did help the low end a tad but I lost almost 2 MPG. I went back to original and sold the sensor for cost. Seems the timing change helps the 600 and 610 but maybe not the 555s.

In that case I'll be interested to see what it does for Dodgezilla's mpg. He's got an '03 like I do. Then again, his is not the HO like mine is so it may affect mpg differently.
Hey Hoss,
The Rokktech did give me a little gain in mileage and more grunt in the lower rpm range. Gained at least 1 mpg for around town driving (20 mpg). Can't say for highway driving yet.
Feels like the power band surge at 2k rpms has moved down to the 1500 rpm range. And the EGTs is 100 degrees cooler now.

I think we all owe SuperDuty a Thank you or some such thing.
He came up with it. We all use it. He didn't ask for anything.
TOP NOTCH.
Maybe a Quad gift certificate for all the money you'll save on fuel?
Or just get him the source code for the ECM calibration so he can figure out how to shut off the post injection? I bet he can.
C'mon Quad, git-r-done.

So...if I'm reading all of this right, you basically loosen four bolts, pull the timing ring, do a little grinding and then put it all back in and tighten it up. Is that right? And something as simple as that will increase fuel mileage AND give more low end power??
ok i thinking about doing this now too just a few ???s do you have to remove the crank pully to do this or just loosen it enough to get the tone ring off? also what tools are you guys useing to do this grinding?
