Desert Racing

Nearly all posts in here seem to be about drag racing, and making the most power on a dyno.
I need useable power. I need to be able to hold my truck wide open for very long periods of time.
Let's do some bench racing here. What kind of combos can you guys come up with that will allow this engine to survive and be competitive?

How much power do you want to run and how much do you want to spend? A 62 or similar sized turbo, and maybe some small flux injectors would put you at 500+, and it would be very usable.

When you say wide open do you mean 3000+ rpms for hours? If so you may want to look into some springs just to be on the safe side.

At this point money is not really an object. What I am preparing for is the Baja 1000 (though i won't actually be racing the 1000 or even be in Mexico). Think "Stock Full Class" suspension wise, but no rules on engine modifications.

Man, i didn't think i would ever hear of anyone else who wants to run a Cummins in the baja. Everyone I talk to gives me the cold shoulder.

Are you talking about using the 12 valve or a newer common rail system? Both are pretty well tried and true, but you'll get more RPMs out of the common rail, plus better atomization of the fuel for better combustion. As far as the "wide open" goes, there really is no such thing in a diesel. These engines are designed to run at governed speed 24/7, think marine diesel and onan generators. You really can't hurt these things until you get upwards of 4000 or more. It all has to do with the burn rate of the diesel and the expansion of the flame front.

Keep searchin and keepin tha topics alive and we may all stand to gain in the form of better info.

Whatever you do dont get on Pirate 4x4 and ask for the rules for stock full or class 8 cause they must be sick of answering ?'s after the response I got.

Post all you want, no shoulders here.

Death Dealer,

There are a couple teams out of Canada desert racing Cummins rams. Check out HRT Offroad and Big Dog Performance, both in Alberta.

ave speed BEST IN THE DESERT / SCORE INTERNATIONAL 40-50 mph ave

engine tuning should be somewhat minimal : sample dez diesel stock truck class engine build : 64/65/13 ss HTT single turbo , Smarty , cam , springs , flux 1s modified cooling system , modified motor mounts ,custom air cleaner system head studs, 4 inch straight exhaust , ram air intake

the big expense is suspension & the rest of the setup transmission etc

500-600 rwhp max is all you need for motor

Thats why I thought that. The weight advantage must be pretty good to go that route, eh?
