Cummins weakness? 325hp vs 305hp
I test drove an 04' 305 hp with 50,000+ miles an 04.5 with 5,700 miles (the truck I ended up purchasing) and an 06' with 30 miles on the odometer. Both the 04's felt significantly stronger than the 06' but I attributed that to the low miles on the brand new truck.

I would be extremely happy with that.

You might want to contact your dealer to see if their is a reflash for that. I see some people on here with newer trucks talking about getting their trucks re-flashed, and getting way better mileage.
The 600's and newer 610's have bigger and deeper oil pans which account for a longer service life between oil changes and hold 3qts more oil than ours. 15 vs. 12. They also changed the piston ring material to help wih seeling and again to prolong oil change intervals. As for the block, I may be wrong, but it's virtually unchanged since the advent of the 24v when they got rid of the "killer dowl pins".
On the tranny side, the 600's became completely throttle by wire, so they don't have a throttle valve. Which makes them slightly more comlicated to get to play nice with performane tq conv, vb's, and higher line pressures. Still bassicly the same old 727TF though.
Oh, and the 305 guys allways get left out of the higher hp super extreme tunes that companies have for their fueling boxes.

Oh well, mine did just fine with a 60hp tow setting...
I think it has to do with how much of a market there is for the product. 305/555's are getting old. I'm sure there are more people playing with the newer trucks.
I've got my $$ on a Smarty. I'm sure Marco will come through for us.
I've already had my TST reprogrammed with adjustable timing in preparation...
I like the fact that my '03 has no cat. I don't want to get popped by an inspection for not having one. I think I'll have to perform surgery on my next truck so the kitty is still there, sort of.
I have to diagree with this statement
"The 600's and newer 610's have bigger and deeper oil pans which account for a longer service life between oil changes and hold 3qts more oil than ours. 15 vs. 12" My bother inlaw has an 05 600 and i have a 555 04 same amount of oil for both. 12qts

The 3rd gens get a different block from the earlier 24v's, the block is "tuned" to help reduce noise, and it has a bottom-end girdle from the factory. the 3rd gens also use different piston cooling nozzles.

You 600 guys better read your owners manual about the oil capacity!!! Cause I got a brochure in front of me that i kept after a test drive last fall when I thought of trading in mine and it says in the engine spec section, that it holds 15qt's of oil????? As to the block change, i would have to say those are pretty minor changes, other than the bottom skirt. Which leads me to question? could you take an old block and install all of our stuff in them and make it the same? I know it's a long way off, but if I ever needed a rebuild, I would make darn sure they reused my block, and not exchange it with an older one.

How many 305 injectors take a dump compared to 325?
