CR Smarty question

Ok, I am a 12v guy, but I read a bit on the third gen forums as well, mainly because I have an addiction problem But I can't be the only one with this question.

The VP guys that have tried a Smarty universially want one, it changes the driving dynamics and responsiveness so much, many will take the cut in HP to have the low end of their Smarty. It is viewed by many as a drivability/pleasure mod more than an all out power mod.

I don't see the same universal exctiment by the CR users, why is that, is it more of a power mod than increasing drivability, and responsiveness?

I hope I made sense there...

Thats because there many many more programmers/downloaders for the 3rd gen then 2nd gen. More compitation and the Smarty has only been out for 4 months.

Us CR guys are able to triple stack and have many different combos.

Have you tried Searching??? There has been 50+ threads deticated to the Smarty in these past months...Id say more then any other given the amount b of time on the market.

The Smarty does everything for us and then some. It does so much and inproves so much on mild to moderate trucks. Some extreeme guys have had problems with it and sold theirs but for the common folk it does great. There are a few 600hp guys with Smarty also. Every truck seems to be different.

I dont think I would like my Silverbullet turbo as much if I didnt have the Smarty to get it spooled.

"Ive never been so excited" "This product is so exciting"

I have actually read most of the threads on it... I have never driven a CR truck, or a modded 24v, so a lot of what I know is therotical, (especially about throttle response) from reading.

Although this sentence did answer some of my question-

What got me was that within 4 months of it coming out for the 24v, people were excited about it, saying it was an exciting product, and it made their hair so soft ( Chris Farley was the man!) What is amazing about their response is for many of them, it is actually hurting HP numbers on a dyno, but changes the dynamics of driving their truck so much it is vieved as well worth it...

I have only driven a 12v a few times and it was modded, fun but not necessarily comfortable. I think part of the difference is that the 3rd gens are so much more driveable and driver friendly that it is hard to improve the overall experience much. That is except for the power and throttle response on the low end(Smarty/BDTD torque management changes). I have tried 6 different boxes and three downloaders over the last two and a half years.

I have settled for now on the Smarty as my downloader and it does improve what I want and make driving my truck more fun along with improved mileage if I drive my age.

I love the SMARTY. The Edge EZ I was running is crude compared to this. The SMARTY is very smooth.

I love the smarty on my truck.....drivability was important to me, and it delivers!

From another post of mine:

I was going to get a j/a for my 06, but got the smarty and manual guages instead. With either box you cant use the upper levels with a stock tranny, and although I've never tried a j/a.....from the impressions I get on this board and TDR, the smarty has a lot more lower end (reduced tq mgmt). I do like the safety features of the j/a.....but I dont find them necessary (i have some self control). I like the smarty on level 1 (30hp) or level 3 (60hp) with my stock tranny....shifts like stock, exponentially more bottom / mid range tq, great drivability, good egt's, moderately better mileage, idle is smoother, sounds better thru exhaust, hugely improved overall perf as well as 60-80+mph performance over stock....and when I get my tranny built the smarty still has plenty of levels to go (so does the juice / hot juice).....however i think the smarty signs off a little on top (but it could be because the bottom / mid are off the hook), and I dont like the fact that the dodge auto sucks and will grenage on anything above level 3 (not smarty or j/a's fault)....

Everyone has their opinion / experience....I personally chose overall drivability (reduced tq mgmt and aswome low to mid power), old school guages, future upgrades (I believe in Marco from what i've seen on the boards) and not having to remove stuff to go to the dealer over cool electronic guages (i'm a Director of IT so that was hard), safety features, on the fly adjustibility and coperate customer service....

and from a $'s perspective, if you can't afford a good box/programmer....dont bomb your truck as that's just the begining...I personally dont like used stuff, no matter the savings....

If it's your first power adder, I doubt you can go wrong either way, they'll both put a smile on your face and a hurt in your wallet!

Well I'm one of the ones that had problems....drivability problems.

level 5 was OK....meaning spool time was acceptable and it would take off once spooled.

7 or higher, i had excessive lag and in turn TONS of smoke. Even after it "spooled," truck never would really take off....just slowly acclerate.

On one more than occasion the truck didn't want to down gear properly when i floored it....it wouldn't just lag and lag until it finally got enough RPM's to get going...that was with #7 or higher

No matter the setting....i experienced the throttle sticking 5 or 6 times. After a WOT run, let off and the truck would to start to slow momentarily...but the take off again at WOT on its own....i would stomp the brake and it fixed it self. Also, I had tranny shifting headaches. IF i could acclerate at my own pace, i had no shifting problems. In traffic having to accelerate with traffic, Tranny jumped a lot and couldn't figure out which gear to use.

I bought the Smarty under the impression i could run softwares 7 and 9....and should have comparable power to my Crazy Larry....but that never happened.

I have run torque management delete with my Crazy Larry and ran a "no tq management" version of the Smarty....the Bullydog was MUCH smoother on my truck.

Every truck does seem to be different. I drive a Smarty on a 6speed occasionally and I LOVE IT...but it never worked well on my truck.

Nothing but good things to say from me. I love my SMARTY, and I will say that I would not sell nor trade it for any other mod for my truck, except mayube a built trans, then I would buy another SMARTY the next day...

I don't know about the early CR's, but the claimed gains for the 06's are pretty much amazing. Aside from the recent issues some have had with (what appears to be) stacking, loading and unloading software issues, I have heard mostly good reviews.

When you are starting out with 325 HP, the urge must be a little less. I am curious, just not dying to order one just yet.

I'd like to see them come out with some updates for the new ones, maybe address some of the minor issues people are having.

I agree that the few people that did have issues with the CR Smarty have a slew of other mods in the mix. I'm also seeing a trend that if the BDDL was one first, those are the same folks that are not impressed or have had issues.

I'm running the CR Smarty as my stand alone performance mod (never had any other box or programmer on it) and so far it's been a good upgrade. Aside from the 170hp setting slipping the clutch , I've had no issues or concerns what so ever.

I filled up yesterday and loaded the 130hp setting to see what kind of mileage it will net. The last tank I hand calculated was about 4k mles ago which netted me 16.8mpg. So far, I wouldn't be surprised if I gained 1.5-2 more MPG.

J Double, you are running a stock clutch, correct?

Is the difference like, dramatic on the lower settings (drivebility wise?)

And furthermore, the higher HP settings, as in the one you e mentioned, is it complete night and day from stock?

I'm probably in the boat that would not likely "stack" or do any other real HP gaining mods after I got a programmer.

Stock clutch for now. It seems to be holding the 130hp setting fine so long as you don't stab the throttle...just roll into it at a good pace.

I rolled into the 170hp setting and now I know what a slipping clutch feels like. RPM's will shoot up with now more pull.

Night and day on the 130 setting. To best describe the feeling, it no longer feels like the throttle is connected to the CP3 via a rubber band. Press the go pedal and away you go.

I'm not going to stack Smarty. If I want top end acceleration I'll hop in my 01 and hammer away.
