I am going to be in the serious mode for replacing some Toyo 17" MT 35's by years end and am curious as to what experience you all have with some of the current 315/70/17 E rated tires. I don't tow a whole bunch but do haul a toy hauler sometimes and a fairly light utility trailer at others. I probably don't need an E but sure feel better with one. My offroad stuff generally revolves around finding a good camping spot in the mountains or during hunting season and for the most part this is dirt/gravel/rock roads or minimal making my own road. Obviously, we don't get a lot of rain out here but it can get messy in the mountains at times from rain, snow, sleet, hail.....thus mud is a possibility somtimes. I'm probably 80-85% on the pavement right now.
My current Toyo's have been pretty good, about 30K miles on them. If I get 30-35K miles on a set of tires I figure that's about it for them. I have no idea how somebody is getting 50K+ out of any tire on a diesel and yes I do rotate every 5K miles religously. I had a set of Toyo AT's before the MT's in the 285/75 size and they were okay on the road but seemed to wear quickly and don't try to take them into much offroad. For the price, I'm shying away from Toyo's this time around.
I'm looking at the Firestone AT and MT series but in all honesty don't need the MT. I'd go MT if I could find somebody around Abq to sipe it for me but haven't been able to so far. I've also looked at the Bridgestone Revo 2 but am not overly impressed with the looks as far as it goes for taking it offroad. Really am tempted on the Hankook Dynapro's but their D rating and some of the reviews about soft sidewalls really scares me. Anybody with specific experience on them as I can't understand the "love them" and "hate them" opposite end ratings for the same tire? The other D rated tires are equally scary to me and please no hate mail but BFG has not been on my Christmas card list for a long time. Square tires, soft sidewalls and chunky tread isn't what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance!

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Still very happy with my Yokahoma's. No problems when towing a 32 foot 5th wheel either, even in strong crosswinds and highway speeds.
you pretty much summed up my dillema for the past month! My 285/75/17 toyo MT's are down to 35-40% tread at 25k miles. I have really enjoyed these tires especially the stiff sidewalls and flat resistance on gravel roads. and i love that size tire but for $1600 for another set not sure its worth it. A guy on here turned me on to these Dunlop Rover MAXX tires that are exactly what I want (more agressive AT and good snow tire) and in load range E, only problem is they are discontinued and i can't find a set of four!! I also looked at the destination tires and they are backordered right now in several sizes and they are one of the only other load range E's.
So now to stir the pot, after tons of reading, think i'm going to try these tread wrights! These are not the re-treads of old, and they can make me a set with 10 ply/E Toyo AT casings for less the $600 bucks. They can actually use toyo MT casings as well but the sidewall lugs don't finish as nicely when they sand them down.

Those tread wrights look pretty impressive for what they are.
Also, to the original question... The 35x12.50x17 Hankook M/Ts I have I shouldn't have much problem getting 40K miles out of them before replaceing. I work them on a regular basis as well pretty hard loaded down.
I'm looking at the toyo A/T in the same size, they have a good weight rating, 50K mile tread warranty, and are about the same price.

Well I looked at the Firestone AT today and the problem I had with it is the wear bar is along the outside line of tread and when you get that far or even close to it you will not have any place to displace water. I talked to a buddy who had these on an F350 and he said at that point they were death on water. I still liked the Firestone MT but in Albuquerque NOBODY sipes a tire anymore. Thus, even though we don't get a lot of rain and ice I still was too uncomfortable to get them.
I just can't swallow the cost of the Toyo's but the place I got the MT's here in Abq actually got some 285/75 AT's in and I thought about it pretty hard but decided to go with the Bridgestone Revo 2's. They are an E and have a softer sidewall than I was enthusastic about but decided they would work better than a D and a non siped MT. Actually got a very good deal on them and got an alignment tossed in for about 6 bucks so couldn't complain. Not enough data yet since it was mostly a drive home, back to church and then to dinner and home again but so far they are smoother riding than the Toyo's, much less rolling resistence and the brakes sure stop faster! Got a trip down to the southern part of the state this next week for a hunting trip so will know more about road manners and mpg change. Really think for the most part they will do just fine outside of heavy snow and mud but just like we don't get a lot of rain and ice, we also don't usually get a whole lot of snow and mud and you can generally plan the trips into the mountains and avoid the most nasty days. Guess a set of chains would not be a bad idea now!

By the way, just an FYI the Toyo out of stock problem is that they are moving their factory into Georgia and are having issues with supply and demand, getting everything over here and up and running and I heard our gov't is running them through the wringer with all the red tape but that's just what I heard from the Toyo dealer, didn't confirm any of it.

Have 2 friends that run the hankook mts 10 ply e rated. One pulls gooseneck alot an the other pulls every now and then, mostly hwy miles but mixed backroads. They both have been very happy with every set they've owned, probably averaging 40-50k on miles per set. I was going to go with this tire but at the time didn't offer it in a
35-12.50-20,
I ended up with the nitro grappler, and have been very pleased with them, have bout 38k on them so far and decent tread left. Lots of those miles are pulling a trailer, but don't know if I'd recomend them because of everyones mixed reviews. Seems like one set
is great next set is horrible. Think I'm going with the hankooks when I get new ones..

Wow.. guess I'm glad I picked up my Firestone destination AT's when I did.. I have the 315/70/17 load range E tires, and I love them. They were going to be my suggestion.

Locally the Destination's are $206 ea. but alas, unavailable. Firestone offered me the Revo 2 equivalent for $231 ea. and I was ready to spring when my local Toyo distributor called and forecasts a 12-16 availability of 285-75-17 AT's. I'm holding my breath until 12-16 that these maypops last. The price will be about $240 ea otd.
currently running BFG 305/65/17 E rated and have about 71k miles on them. they get rotated, balance is checked and alignment done every 5-7.5k miles. i ordered bought them through a local firestone and bought the lifetime balance/rotation/alignment and I USE it....should be able to get another 10k then it's time for replacement....
