Cold Air Intake (the down and dirty)

I know this issue has been visited many times. I was wandering if someone could give me a quick down and dirty on the intake's that are available. Price vs. reliability. The price range is so wide (200.00-400.00) I dont know if I am missing something. IE....Airaid vs. Volant vs. K&N vs. AEM ect...ect..ect... Thanks for your help.

If I were getting a system that used an oiled filter then it would be the Scotty Ram Air III (or whichever one is needed for your truck). In my opinion it is one of the best (if not THE best).

That being said, I'm not a fan of oiled filters. That's why I went with the BHAF (see link in signature).

Avoid K&N. They don't filter well enough for diesels.

Oh yeah....welcome to DTR!!!

Thanks. Been reading on this site for about 6-8 months but just recently joined. This place has a lot of great information, I've learned alot. I knew I had read some post about air filters but couldnt find them when I done a search. (Got wrapped up in Superduty's CP3 info and forgot where everything else was at... )

I went ahead and bought an AEM Brute Force with the Dryflow filter. It isn't an oiled filter which I liked. Price was right. So far I haven't had any dirt building up in the intake tube so the filter seems to flowing well and filtering at the same time.

Hello, I've had the dryflow for several months now.No dirt issues after several checks. I'm finally use to the turbo noise now. You might want to try the outwears prefilter. I removed the rubber on the pass. side of the radiator to allow air flow in. Once I put on the prefilter anyway.

I think I sent you a PM a week or two ago on dieselram.com?

I ordered an Outerwears pre-filter for it...should be here next week. Thanks for the tip.

The AEM Brute Force...hmm! Basically an open filter design (no type of box or splash guard) and you havent had any issues with moisture? I guess the outerwears filter would eliminate most of that tho'. What kind of price range did you find?

The side towards the engine has the heat shield, but it isn't the greatest design. I'd say that's the only bad thing about their kit. I haven't had any moisture problems so far though.

I gave $216 for the AEM kit from rpmoutlet.com. I had one bad experience with them in the past, but this time I had no issues whatsoever with them.

FYI...the Outerwears part number to fit the AEM Dryflow filter in the kit is 20-1380. I believe it was around $32 from Outerwears.

I appreciate it. I just didnt want to spend 400+ dollars for something that I could get the same results with @ 200 give or take. Pardon me for being dumb but that comes with the filter and tube ect.... I dont have to purchase a separate part for a larger tube do I.
I dont know why my signature shows up sometime and sometimes it doesnt!!!

You're not Dumb. Dumb would be going out and spending a fortune, then asking.
Your intake tube is fine. And you are also correct about the $, your not going to pick up any real H.P, so why spend alot when you could apply that money to something that will give you gains?

Biggest bang for the Buck, BHAF. Under $100 and your off and flying.

Just realized you have an 05, strike what I said about the tube, I have no clue what I'm talking about there.

Your sig. only shows up once so the thread don't get cloged up with peoples 500 character signatures.

Thats what HOSS recommended in a previous post. Havent done much research on them tho. Actually dont know anything about them. I was going to do a search and try to find some more info. Exactly on the $ issue!! My EDGE money is being spent on the 2 year old daughter right now. I was figuring a few mods at a time and eventually I will get there. Air in and Air out being the first of those.

Get a scotty air systems intake. I'm running one on mine and I can only hit 1200* EGT's with 100hp sticks and a comp.

Here's mine...just to give you an idea of what we're talking about.

I replaced ALL of my intake tubing. If you want to use your stock tubing then you can run a BHAF for under $50. When you replace all of the tubing, get an Outerwears cover and a bracket kit like I did then it will cost more. Probably the same results either way you do it.
