Code P0628 w/FASS 95 install (Attn Dan)

I just had a shop install a FASS 95 yesterday, and today it stalled on me numerous times on my way home until about 3 miles away, it stalled and would not restart. I had to call a tow truck to get it home. It still won't start. The pump is making noise so I'm assuming that it's working, but I could be wrong - I'm not a mechanic.

P0628 is "Fuel Pump "A" Control Circuit Low". Can anyone help me out with this?

How much diesel do you have? I had to keep a half tank to keep from fluctuating pressure...it died one day at 1/4 tank.

the whole time i had my FASS, i had a P0628 code. It has to do with the wiring. Yes there is a different way to wire it so that it doesn't throw the code...but oh well.

You gotta be kidding me. It did it first at slightly under a 1/4 tank and then again and again until I was around 1/8 and then never would start again. I'll have to try to pour a 5 gallon can of Diesel in, although it doesn't make much sense.

You have an 05. SO a draw tube needed to be installed in the tank. If the tank was REAL low on fuel because of the install, chance are that you were sucking air. Fill it up and i bet your stalling issue goes away.

As for the code......on an 05, the relay needs to be re-installed and the ground wire cut (or removed from harness plug) back at the tank. This will fool the ECM into thinking all is normal with the in-tank pump.

Its covered in the last few pages in our install instructions.....pg. 16

My 03 5 speed SO just did the same thing...Codes the same...it was lift pump.
Changed out under warranty.

Dan,
Did the draw tube come with the kit? I'll have to ask the shop guy if he installed one. My hunch this morning was that it was like the tube was now too short and not getting deep down in the tank.

Yes....the 05 Kit (PN 1007 or 1006) should have had the STK-1001 included.

Here is the brake down on the kit if you want to see it.....Page 6-7 and 10-11

We suggest setting the tube about the width of 2 quarters stacked flat off the bottom of the tank. Any higher and you run into issues, not unlike what you are seeing.

Dan you may need to highlight or emphasize to your dealers that this is an important part of the install becouse I, as well as 2 others with similar trucks had the same thing happening.

I purposly let the tank run until empty becouse I wanted to make it easier on the "great[tapdshut] " installer at liberator performance in PA. Then he complained about having to put some fuel in it afterwards and it died on me 3 times before I could get it to a diesel station. I have know been watching the overhead and when it reads that I can go 100 miles I need to find a station IMMEDIATLY. Anb yes I have to reset that code alot. Something else you might want to tell the installers.

By the way what do I need to do to fix this problem? I would like to get the full use out of my tank. Too bad I will have to leave a 1/4 tank in mine when I drop it as it wont stay running much past that.:(

We do our best but there is some responsibly on our dealers for the installs. We can not police everything they do and how they install it. Although we get calls and letters from customers that we take very seriously when talking about a bad experience. We also have many secondary dealers that are out there that we never talk (Even though they have full access to us) to as well. We are going to be fixing this in the near future with an “Authorized” FASS dealer network. This will help with the quality of the installs and such. But honestly, it all boils down to if they followed our instructions correctly or not. We work very hard to put every detail of the install in there. I would suggest asking around about the quality of work of any place before they worked on my truck......

tristan21 Feb 5, 2007 07:15 PM

Thats great advice Dan but I didnt have more than one to choose from as I had to drive 2 hours to get to that one and I was working on the road and had a bad stock lifty goin out. No real choice other than to take off work and do it myself in the parking lot of the hotel.

By the way making an authorized dealers network would be a great idea. Just make sure to publicize it well enough for it to be known that it may make a big difference.

So what size and type of tube do I need to fix the problem now? Im sure it will be obvious as soon as I get the tank dropped but I dont want to wait till that point.

DirtEater Feb 5, 2007 08:03 PM

Dan,
Okay, I'm back up and running now that I poured 2 race jugs full of Diesel into it, all in total about 11 gallons. It started right up and I took it to fill it up completely. I really don't want to have to drive around and risk running out of fuel at 1/4 tank and less.

Will the installer have to lower the tank again for the draw tube? If so, he's not gonna be happy, but then again I wasn't happy when I stalled and had to pay for a tow truck to get it home.

One other thing....when I turn the ignition switch back to Acc. to listen to just the radio while parked, the pump is running. I take it the installer screwed that detail up too, correct?

tristan21 Feb 5, 2007 08:12 PM

Yep thats wrong also. Mine is off in acc. But who know with the pros over at the shop in PA that did my work maybe it was another mistake.

Dirty I did read on hear that someone said that they wired there's somehow different that it doesnt run even with the ignition on until your about to start it. Something about how you wire it. Just a thought since they get to redo yours anyway.

I'll look around for it. I'm almost afraid to have them try anything that's terribly different. I don't want to give them the opportunity to make things worse.[laugh]

Anyone know?

tristan21 Feb 5, 2007 08:29 PM

No joke. Atleast they didnt have to work on your clutch, I got lucky and they also did the warranty work for South Bend on my clutch.[duhhh] Didnt even plug the Reverse and 4x4 lights in the right senders.

Did I mention that you should all take your trucks over to the PROs at LIBERATOR used car sales, dump truck repair, trash pick-up service, ebalming, geisha girl massage, and oh yeah performance diesel. Those guys rock.[tapdshut]
