Can't pull the trigger Quad or Diablosport predator
Can't pull the trigger
I’ve wanted to buy something to improve my MPG. I was looking at quads box or a programmer like the predator. I don’t pull very often maybe twice a month (7000 lbs.), and my daily commute is stop and go traffic 3 miles round trip. Right now I get an average of 11 to 12 MPG, and as soon as I take it out on the freeway it climbs up fast, I have seen 18+ no problem. The problem is that I almost never get to take out on the open road. So I’m looking for something that it will work with an almost stock truck (see sig.) that would give a few more MPG in stop and go traffic. Oh yea by the way if possible something that will not void my warranty. Thanks |
Well you are looking at a tough situation, first of all if you put upgrades on your truck to "improve" milage the only time you will see a noticable differance is on the highway, mainly because you drive them different when you do upgrades everyone does especially around town. Now if your out on the highway cruising at 70 then you will notice some improvments. As far as upgrades that won't void out the warranty your looking at bolt on equipment, stuff that can be removed and returned to stock before going to dealer such as exshaust, turbo, intakes, and injectors. Now understand if you had to remove this stuff it would take alot of time or cost alot of money, and also a programmer or chip is what makes all the other stuff really run.

The main problem is the huge iron Cummins never gets warmed up during a 3-mile stop/go commute, hence the lower mileage.
I don't know of any add-on that is going to overcome that, short of plugging in the block heater to keep the engine somewhat warm. |
I know the short commute is my biggest problem, and I do try to plug it in as much as I can, and still hardly ever gets up to temp. I thought about buying a commuter car but I just love my truck too much and love to dive it even though is for that short of a distance. Another thing that I'm about to do is a long haul about 4000 miles round trip and I thought this was the perfect excuse to convince me and the DWF that I need a programmer or box.

Quad 65 h.p. tow box.

Thanks Hounddog, that was one of my first choices till I found the predator from DiabloSport for a few dollars more. So I'm leaning towars the Predator.

Give up on it. Everyone will claim 1.5MPG from every mod they've ever done. Very little will increase your mileage a measurable amount, or even enough to offset the cost of the add-on.

I cant speak personally bout it but you may be a good canidate to try the roktech sensor/ tonering mod. people say they notice mmore down low and the dealer isnt going to spot the sensor or tone ring.
Im sure someone can chime in on this... |
For a short commute like that you ought to just buy yourself a little used econo box. It'll cost you a couple grand for a decent one, but it'll triple your milage and you won't be hurting your Cummins. It ain't good for the motor to do those short little 3-mile trips. I think MY commute is too short sometimes, and I've got an 8 mile one-way. Barely enough to get the engine warm in the winter (unless I plug it in), or I'm warm at about half way in the summer.

That not warmed up drive is a killer for the CTD! It NEEDS HEAT!!! Preferably all the time, to avoid coking and cylinder deposits. A programmer will not help a 3 mile commute at all IMHO. For that kind of commute and light towing, you don't need a CTD........................Just kidding, we all need our CTD's. Drive a rice burner to work and save the big dog for weekend cruises and towing [rant]

Bekim, you are probably right, but I have made that short commute for 2 1/2 years with no problems. Maybe I have just been lucky but so far it runs better than new, no injector knock, no smoke in the mornings, absolutely no problems, It gets an oil change every 3k to 5k miles and fuel and air filter every 10k to 15k miles. It might not last me 300k but if it last 100k I’ll be happy, Heck at my rate that would be like 10 years. [laugh]
I bought it to dive it not to park it. |
