BFG 285 or Nitto 285
 

I am currently running the BFG 285 (A/T) and got about 45,000 miles out of them. I was considering going to the Dura Grappler to get the E rating tire but have not found many threads on them. They are about $20 more a tire at the local tire shop. He tried to push me toward the Terra grappler which he claims to have gotten 75,000 miles out of on his powerstroke. The truck is used about 70% of the time to pull my landscape trailer is why I was looking at going to the E rating, but wanting to stay with an (a/t) for traction. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have run the Terra Grappler AT and the BFG AT. My driving is 90% highway and 45-50k a year. Under those conditions, the Terra Grappler lasted about 45k. The BFG would have gone 60-65k easy if I had not traded the truck in that they were on.

The Dura Grappler is a relatively new tire and looks to be pretty decent for pavement all season use. It is new enough that not a lot of guys are running it yet, although plenty should look into it. On paper it should be quieter, more durable, better street manners, and net slightly better mileage than an AT tire, but who knows in the real world. That tire is on the top of my list when I need new tires, primarily because I can get a 245/75R17 for my dually. A little wider and about the same height.

I believe I will stick with the BFG if I do not get enough feedback on the Dura grapplers. thanks for your reply.

I have run two sets of BFG A/T and one set of Nitto Terra Grappler on a Tundra (which did not wear tires very well--lots of cupping etc) The Terra's were way better. They lasted much longer and wore more even. Terra's for me when my Michelins wear out.

I have the Dura Grapplers on my truck, and I can say that soo far I am completely satisfied! (other than the price! Ouch! ) They had over 17/32nds on them when new. I am hoping to get over 65K with them. They are rated for 60K, but I consistently get more than the rated miles out of my tires. I keep them rotated every 10K, and balanced too. They have pretty good traction as well.

I would say Nittos, not based on experiance but based on load rating and psi holding... I like BFG tires, but no E rated tires in 285? ***?

The BFG and Terra Grappler are close in price and the Dura is about $20 more a tire. I found alot of mixed feelings on the Terra's being to soft and wearing quickly is why I was leaning toward the Dura. My truck originally came with Michelins which were awful for traction.

I wish I had more miles on them to tell you. I have about 12K on them now, and they have worn to 13/32 in the rear and a little above 14/32 in the front. At this rate I will get about 45K out of them.....that is a little dissapointing for what they cost. They are warrantied for 60K, so maybe I'll get an adjustment!?

i bought a set of terra grapplers (10 ply) in the 285 size. i wanted a bit bigger tire from the stock bfg 265's and for a e rated/10ply in the 285 size, the terra grapplers were the most reasonably priced for my area ($780 mounted/balanced/tire disposal + any of the other b.s. charges some places try to stick you with). i like the tires, although i think their formula is a bit softer than the stock bfg's i had and will probably result in less miles. i got 50k out of the stockers. time will tell what i'll get out of the nitto's[coffee]
