I used to have a 5.9 but want to upgrade to a 6.7, talk me out?

I used to own an 05 5.9l and after 100k miles, I couldn't be happier. Never even a hiccup. I sold it a a few years ago and ive had an 06 Ram 1500 HEMI for the past few years, which honestly is pretty good with no complaints but im looking to get back to diesel. I hear nothing but horror stories with the 6.7L but what attracts me is the 6speed trans and if i did get the 6.7l, I would obviously do all the deletes but I feel like I still here issues. So my question would be, should I buy a 2007 5.9l or an 07.5-09? I know these questions are asked all the time but I really want to know HOW BAD REALLY IS THE 6.7l? I mean with all those deletes is should be good but then what if I buy a 6.7 with like 80k miles and all the issues are present and even with the DPF delete, itll be too late since too many issues arose? Exhaust brake, more power, 6spd trans...I just feel like a 6.7l is nice upgrade BUT IS IT? Also, Since the 48RE is a 4spd trans, does it have a TOW/HAUL button? Another words, how much can I tow WITHOUT turning O/D off? I just hate driving 70mph pulling a trailer in 3rd gear revving high

My '08 is stock, but I did buy the stuff to do the deletes ... I'm just not home often enough to do it.

Other than some warranty work, I've been very happy with my 6.7L .... some folks will tell you to avoid the '07.5 and '08, and stick with the '09 so that the bugs would be worked out.

This truck is just as strong as a '08 Ford F-350 in similar trim; I raced my next door neighbor's and even though I was rowing gears with the 6 speed manual, I was slowly pulling away from him.

Before you buy a 6.7, you need to research; the EPA has cracked down on deleting, and you may not be able to accomplish it. If that is a deal-breaker for you, then you should look for a 5.9.

If you have emissions and visual inspections, I would stick with the 5.9. Also the 5.9's will get better MPG than the 6.7's especially if the 6.7 has all the emission junk on it.

5.9, only have a cat to worry about. 6.7, umm yeah, lots of emissions fun. Seems like a pretty easy choice to me.... actually it was a easy choice for me...lol

When I had my '07.5 I was getting around 8 mpg in the city. With my '06 5.9 I easily get 16 mpg! I must have bought a lemon 6.7 cause nothing but problems w/ the emissions. Now that I have the 5.9 no problems @ all. Now the guy I bought my Nerf bars from had an 2010 6.7 and he told me he was getting 16 mpg.

They have ironed out a lot of issues since the first release in 07.5, I have had 3 5.9s over the last 10+ years but I would buy a used late model 6.7 in a heartbeat. Go drive one, just don't bring your wallet if you don't want to buy it.

Yup just the real issue is the emmisions garbage they have in the later models now. But if you just wnat a 6 speed you can get that in the older version. I have an 06 5.9 6 6 speed manual.

The 6.7 is a strong engine and that 6-speed auto is SWEET. I kind of wish I still had mine but I had to sell it when the economy went to crap. Having said that,,,,, my early 04 truck is getting me 17-18 mpg driving 30 miles each way to and from work and that's without getting on the interstate. My 6.7l truck wouldn't even get that with only highway driving. I have considered trading back up a couple times but deep down inside I know it would be a stupid choice when this truck only has 70,000 miles on it....

I looked at and researched a new 6.7, check out the camper towing web sites for a lot of info. Emissions seemed to put a lot of issues into place and i read a lot of complaints about the lac of fuel mileage. The new trouble free automatic transmission seemed to be the highlight of the new models. In the 5.9 the NV5600 manual seemed to be the choice for reliability. I actually found a used 2006 2500 Quad cab 4X4 manual with 37000 miles, they were asking $38,000, that is more than the truck sold for when new! kinda speaks for the 5.9 huh. I also read something about a class action lawsuit filed against the 6.7 Dodge so do some research. On the other hand, the new trucks do have a 100,000 mile warranty. Since I only use our truck to pull a boat with and drive less than a few thousand miles a year we found an 03' manual that does the job just fine for less then half the price of a new one. The hard part is finding one!
