Aux. Oil Cooler w/Bypass Filter on '03???

I have an '03 & live in Phoenix, AZ. (It's HOT!!!), & I just bought an Oilguard Bypass Filter. On my shelf, at home, I have a Borg-Warner 5-1/2"X 11"X 1-1/2" oil cooler.
I was thinking about adding the cooler in the filters return line.

My buddy thinks that, possibly, too much oil cooling might occur & that the cooler might be something else to go wrong in the system.

Anybody think this might be "overkill" on oil cooling? I'd appreciate any "expert" opinions.

Thanks.

The bypass has such a small orifice, you really won't be cooling very much oil. You'd get more out of the cooler if you can get more flow thru it. Craig

I would only add the cooler if you have too many go-fast-goodies and can't keep the water or oil cool enough.

If you have an overheating problem, I would troubleshoot it to a root cause. Adding the cooler in this instance would be band-aiding the problem.

Long version, if you want to read it all!
Back in my early college days, I took a summer & built the 2.0 4cyl in my pinto...Well, I was building just a little too much power for the radiator & had to have a bigger radiator built. Even then, it would get too hot (over 220) in the summer on the freeway and in the city. So, I added a big flex fan and an oil cooler. It worked great. Between the oil cooler thermostat and the water temp thermostat, the motor would stay at 160 (t-stat temp) whether I was sitting in traffic or cruising on the freeway. However, the motor would not get over 140 in the winter, so I had to keep a peice of cardboard in the car to block 1/2 the radiator in the winter.

I have never had an overheating problem with this truck.

I just thought that cooling the oil a bit more might be a "good thing". However, I don't know for sure. I'm not interested in hurting anything.

Thanks.

if you want more oil cooling , just buy the oil cooler for a truck ISB engine , trying to remember right off hand , the Dodge ISB has 5 plate cooler and the truck has 7 plate , the new ISB 6.7 will have 8 plate cooler . easy to change. and nothing to add on the outside of the engine

a larger/more efficent jacket water oil cooler will still never get the lube oil below jacket water temprature once the engine is at operating tempratures.. might help the water warm up though on cold days..

[myself, i would like to see ~210*f water temps, ~180*f oil temps]
