hows your stocker auto trans held up and with what mods? I am looking into a new 3 rd gen and it may be auto haven't decided which route to go yet. I dont have plans for anything big with it, just intake, exhaust and i programmer of some type, mainly for fuel mileage, a air dog, and a small lift and some wheels and tires. I typically dont pull much more than my boat, not sure of the weight, its a 35 foot baja. and occasionall a horse trailer or a bobcat. I really just want it to last atleast a year before I visit Dave Georand

Stock, it will last a long time. 30 HP, no issues. Big tires, lift, programmer. That will put some strain on the tranny. Look for one with 4.10 gears and auto. That will make happier with the tires/rims.

My tranny heats up fast with my tires and Smarty Jr on SW3. Torque converter dosn't lock up anymore, I have to manual lock it when climing hills or in town to keep it from overheating.

short of rebuilding and upgrading, what are some fixes and preventative measures I can take it making the transmission last a bit longer? A fluid flush, have the bands inspected and tightened, manual lock up switch?

cant do much to save a stock tranny mine lasted less then a year you can check bands flush all you want the problem is the heat is to high and the clutch packs will fry no matter what you do i have seen the packs welded together in stock trannys. all your doing is buying time with a vb and the rest you need to up the clutch pack count fluid and so on if not your sitting on a time bomb.

If you are just looking for your tranny to last a year until you upgrade it I think you will be allright as long as you use some common sense. My stock tranny has made it 112k miles. For the last 20k, I have been running 35" tires and for the last 11k I have been running both the smarty junior (lvl 2-3 mostly) and the senior (lvl 3-5).

I have the 3.73 gears and have done nothing but serviced the tranny. The last 20k miles have not been really nice miles either. Numerous trips in the mountains out here, driving muddy and snow packed roads (trying not to get stuck) have sent mine over the edge. Overall I am happy with the amount of stuff the tranny held.

As long as you dont expect it to last I dont think you will be dissapointed.

if u want mpg, just look untill u find a stick(real trucks have 3 pedals). a clutch upgrade is a lot cheaper than a built auto...

well the biggest problem is i can not find one within a reasonable driving distance that doesnt have a million miles on it. Thte best deal i found is 95k miles for 20 grand still, plus im kind of tired of driving a stick since everything i have owned has been a stick up to this point. I am not expecting auto to last..because i know me, ill want more power, that is why i am going to start saving for a georand trans as soon as I get the truck if it is auto which is more likely than not. It wont have any more than a smarty junior something along those lines, and exhaust adn intake until the transmission is upgraded and a graduate college. until then it will just be mostly show and not as much go. I have priced out 18x9 XD Diesel and 35X12.50 toyo open country mt's for the moment i buy a truck and also a kore 3" suspension lift.

go with the gorand before u mod the power...

Shift kit to get the line pressures up will be the best investment you can make. Upgrade the front servo cover with a billet one for better sealing and upgrade the 2nd gear band strut also.

If you are looking at an 05 or later a shift enhancer is a good investment.

Got 200,000 miles out of my stock tranny.

you can do it but i bet you are not pushing out 550+ hp for the whole 200k

I am not looking for 500hp atleast anytime within the next 3 years...what is you average mpg not pulling anything just regular driving?

If you want mpg, then an 03-04 woul be where to start.The later trucks make more power but at the cost of economy.

Your mpg will depend on speed and your right foot more than anything else. My 05 will do anywhere from 17-22 depending on speed,drving style, and environment.
