Any HP air boxes without oiled filter???

Got a little bonus coming and I'm thinking about getting an air intake but I think I would like something without an oiled media filter. Does anybody make one???

Dry filter air box upgrade

A month or so ago,...I believe on TDR somebody built a homemade rig that was really sharp that used a bhaf. I talked to AK RAM about it and he had been corresponding with the guy on the development. He posted pics and everything. Looked cool and fit like a glove. The price was chump compared to usual air box upgrades also. He had all the pieces labled and part numbers and everything. Try a PM to AK. I'm sure he could put you in touch.

Someone on this board did the same thing. I just can't remember who. He has a huge Fleetguard round filter. I guess I could just find me a big filter and make something. I have trucks at work. I may just get one of those filters and start coming up with something...

It was probably the same bomb. Now that you mention it I believe it was a Fleetguard filter the guy used.

Why not just drill a bunch of holes in the bottom of the stock air box and use the stock filter. Works for me.

Ray, I did that and even drilled a 4" hole with heater pipe coming out of the bottom of it. Even with the AFE filter it pulls the minder down to 35 to 65%. I know the minder is a piece of junk but I know that if I run with no filter the minder does not pull down at all. This tells me that the box is still too restrictive.

I am having a problem pulling the minder down on my aFe filter (Pro Guard 7, W/ torque tube), I am guessing this means that my factory filter was less restrictive?? As it failed to pull it down unless the filter was dirty......

Ever since I drilled the 4" hole and installed the heater pipe mine usually pulls down to 65%. It never used to go past 35%. Very strange since it must be getting more air now..

I think Scotty has mentioned this before.

He talked about how his new air filter setup (one where you cut hole in hood) could NOT be used with a filter minder, because it has too much flow.

The Ram Air 3 underhood would make the filter minder bottom out on the first WOT run through the gears on the highway.
We later learned that most of the filter minders where built with an incorrect spring in them.
The Ram Air 3 is a different design then a factory box, we tried a filter minder in the coupler for the sensor...sucked it to the bottom too. I decided to leave it out as I did with the Scotty Air II.
Visual inspection has always been my preferred way to check the filters even in the stock box.

With the shaker hood, I never attempted to put a minder in that set up as its very visible and open compared to the underhood applications.

The only thing I would caution folks on is getting moisture in an air intake that has a paper element filter that has the air drawing straight onto/through it...like a stock panel filter. The filter will breakdown. Just a heads up.

my take on a bhaf in my 3rd gen [with water resistant outerwears]

there are a few others that have done something similar, but with the smaller version of the bhaf. i don't know if anyone else has done this with the 10.5x10.5 filter element [i used a napa 2790]

I've been out-of-town or I would have chimed in. Check my member's photo gallery for pics of the BHAF. I stuck quit a few in there for folks to see. I put 3,200 miles on this BHAF last week alone chasing caribou around the tundra (yep, my butt is sore). 2,000 of these miles were on dirt roads. I'll get an oil analysis done next week to see how it filtered. Up mountains, down mountains, back up mountains, loaded with around 3,500 lbs, TST on 5/4, boost capped at 28lbs, EGTs never got above 1020 degrees F. Baring oil analysis results, this BHAF has outperformed my expectations. Read more about it here: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=42436

This thread also explains the "filter minder pulling down" phenomenon that most see with an aftermarket system. It may not be an accurate explanation, but it is an explanation. I ran a piece of hose from my minder, through the intake tube, into the air filter itself so the reading was coming from pressure differential inside the filter, not from inside the intake tube, totally eliminating the venturi effect. Haven't had any filter minder issues since. The thread above is VERY long but has some great discussion if you have time to read it. We learned a lot on that one. The BHAF info is on the last few pages.

Oh, and the caribou hunt was successful. After a lengthy stalk, I managed to harvest a beut at 50 yards with my bow.
