AIRAID filter/ MIT air tube installed 600 series

I recently installed AIRAID filter and air tube (PN#300-159) on my stock 2004.5 CTD "600" (still only 1,600 miles) here's the update: pulling a hill approx 2miles med grade with stock filter the filter minder would show about 30% (65-90mph repeated heavy throttle, I'd have to back off to keep the speeds less than 90 then get back in it again repeat repeat etc)

With the Airaid filter and MIT (modular intake tube) the same test the filter minder didn't budge at all. I can feel the boost come in sooner, way improved throttle response. You can also hear the turbo much better.

Fuel mileage so far on this truck has not been great averaging mid 13's combo city/ hwy before the change now it came up to low 14's (hand calc)

Did it fit good? I had to do some easy mod's to make the quickfit stuff fit better as it was into the underhood insulation pretty good before mods. ( basically moved the air intake LOWER in the sheetmetal and re-drilled two holes )

There's a flat spot on the piece they supply that the filter goes on, I drilled this out and installed the filter minder in the hole- some modification to the grommet to get the minder to sit lower for clearance improvement (still touches lightly) between it and the under hood insulation. I think they say this kit does not fit with the 1 1/2" insulation underhood (mine does not seem anywhere near that thick but it made strong contact before mod's)

Summary: I'm happy with the response improvement and turbo sound, the mods were easy, fuel mileage improved slightly though not great to start with from what I read on this site.

Next: I'm wanting to change the muffler for improved sound/ flow...I assume lower EGT's would also happend but I don't have gauges to verify anything. I'd like to get better MPG's too

I would sure appreciate some exhaust/ muffler recommendations from you pro's out there.......right now I'm thinking about the AEROTURBINE muffler only since the stock exhaust system is already 4" I probably won't put a box on the truck for a while

I agree, the filters are nice and big. They work well so far.I followed the link posted and that seems to be what I installed. For the 600CTD it's AIRAID part number 300-159. For the 600 they don't show the stock filter minder installed like the picture shows on the link, BUT it can be made to work. I posted a picture of the installation in my gallery. Tried to post on this reply but was too large to allow this. Hope the pic and PN helps!

Thanks for the info, I have an '04 2500 (305) LWB and am leaning towards that same air filter setup. I am also looking at redoing the exhaust (4 inch turbo back). I kinda liked the AEROTURBINE plus Donaldson 34 inch muffler setup. Keep us updated on the mileage and such.

I really wanna chip it, but not sure whcih one to choose.

The pic really helped out, thanks.

no problem, glad the pic helped. I am also interested in some exhaust changes but need some direction. Have you heard the Donaldson and / or the Aeroturbine? So far I'm still getting what I consider not so good mileage. Running low-mid 14mpg's on average. (3.73's, AT, DRW and less than 1800 miles) I'm also considering a chip or box of some sorts.... I'm looking for advice on that stuff too.

51" Donaldson has not shown me better mileage but has better turbo spool and passing power on the highway. slighty louder according to the wife, but not in the cab. I'm pleased with it. I had a lot of soot build up in my stock muffler and am wondering if my cat could be slightly clogged up contributing to the average of 14-15MPH hand calculated.

I kinda like what he did. I just cant decide what size muffler to install 34 or 51

I just filled up today and got 18.7 hand calc for the tank. that is 60/40 hwy city, respectively. it is slowly improving with time, i have about 4k on it now. i did some minor towin to help speed the break in process.

I put the AirAid along with it's sock on and then made my own torque tube with 2 4" rubber elbows from AirFlow and a 7" piece of 4" exhaust pipe that I had powdercoated.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the pics of the Donaldsons and also the Aeroturbine / Donaldson. I like the idea of not too loud, my question is whether or not removing the CAT would be legal or not. I've heard that the CAT does not add much if any restriction but that was from guys trying to sell cat-back systems. I'll keep watching/ reading/ checking/ listening and make some kind of decision pretty quick.
I'll be towing my jeep / spare parts / tools a few hundred miles in a couple of weeks, hope this helps with the break in and mileage. I still was hoping for better.........

I recently spoke with a company that makes cat-back systems and they recomended leaving mine alone saying it already flows really well and that there would be little to no improvement with a cat-back system.

With that said, removing the cat and muffler, per a friend of mine with the same truck made a big difference. Better spool up, better towing and a lot louder. No chip or intake yet. YMMV.

Fltfndr, thanks for the info... this is the exact intake I am planning on buying for my truck... glad to see some positive feedback before taking the plunge.

I've also talked to somebody who ran an AeroTurbine w/o muffler and he said the SOTP difference was amazing... not sure about the noise tho... might be loud. I think I'm going to do the Aeroturbine by itself, then if the wife deems it unacceptable, I'll add a Donaldson or Nelson behind it.

I sure am appreciative of the feedback and suggestions! I'm thinking of trying the Aeroturbine in place of the stock muffler and leaving the cat for now. I too will have to see what my better half says about the noise. Don't want one too loud.....

The AIRAID prefilter number is, I think,(don't hold me to this one guys)PN799-128 for this cone filter:
Base 11.5"x5"x7"
Top:9"x4.5"
Height: 7 3/8"

I've got an older cherry W200 PWagon 440 truck that I thought ran good but this new truck continues to impress me.....I could just about live without a box for a while if the exhaust pans out to improve the throttle response and spool up. My mileage is not what I expected but oh well....

I was cruising around the site and found this link to a soundclip of the Aeroturbine, it is NOT the one on the Aeroturbine site, sounds kinda loud to me, but good

http://home.earthlink.net/~tlawren349/Aeroturbine.mp3

it sure is hard to decide.....hmmmmmmm
