Air Intake to get turbo whistle thru exhaust?

On my 99 PSD I had a TYMAR open element intake and the truck sounded excellent when it drove away from you, you could hear the turbo through the exhaust like on a semi. I want to try and get some of that sound on my Cummins, but dont want all the hot engine bay air. I have been looking at the S&B system, then replacing the element with one of the new Amsoil cone filters. Does the S&B design with the cover on it get some decent turbo sound? How about any of the other ones you guys are running?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply,

I want to clarify too that when you are hearing the truck from outside, or when it goes by, I want to hear some turbo whistle through the exhaust, not just the whistle from under the hood when driving it. I loved the way the open element intake on my PSD made it sound when it drove past. I anticipate most open element intakes will be similar in this regard, but I thought since some of them have more of a box structure around them, they may end up being somewhat quieter. The S&B in particular has nearly as much enclosure around it as the stock box does, and draws air from the fender well area I believe.

I think you're gonna have to straight pipe it or get one of the louder aftermarket systems in order to hear it through the pipe. Your cat is gonna keep you from hearing it too.....

I figure the cat will hurt it some, but after 37K on that Donaldson, it is getting awfully loud. It is louder than my PSD ever was, exhaust-wise.

Are you sure it's coming out the exhaust? How can that be? The whistle lasts clear through the combustion and exhaust?? It's gotta be coming out from the intake loud enough to be heard from outside. Either way, I like it.

I know some people know what I mean--the big rig turbo-out the exhaust sound, the fluttery sound.

A buddy of mine had a 6.0 PSD with the Banks exhaust and you could hear the whistle out the pipe. Itwas almost like a chirping sound.

turbo whistle

You will not get the flutter type sound from the Cummins engine, regardless if its straight piped, stacked, etc. Sounds cool on the PSD though.

Yeah it does sound cool on the 99 PSD, don't like the jet sound of 6.0 though, because to me it just means it's a few more RPMs closer to complete failure. Well that sucks that it won't do what I want it to do in that regard. I still want to open it up some, that airbox scares the carp out of me, since it seals so poorly and is so sloppy.
