Air Filter/Intake Question

I'm sorta confused. When I had my Amsoil drop in air filter, my filter gauge would get sucked down, I've had the filter in there for about 2 years or so with the occasional cleaning out that didn't change anything, as soon as I floored it for some time, it would suck it down. Now I got a stock Fram air filter in there and the gauge doesn't move, even with it dirty. I had a friend tell me that when the gauge gets sucked down after intake mods, it's the extra air rushing in pulling the gauge down. Doesn't make sense to me, when I see it being pulled down, to me, it means restriction, it was like that on my KW. Which one is it?

Go do a search on Cai and do the mod put the stock 4 inch pleat in. The filter you are using does not filter as much out hence the filter minded not coming down. The stock will come down because it is filtering more out.

Go to Napa and get a 9946 air filter. It is the equivalent of a drop-in BHAF with 4" pleats and 675cfm.

While the Amsoil filter is very efficient, it doesn't flow as much. I think Amsoil told me about 100 CFM lower than the old 2" OEM filter, so a fair amount less than the new 4" pleat version. So that's why the filter minder got sucked down. Mine did the same thing, so I returned it to Amsoil and went back to stock.

There isn't a better fitler than stock.

Your friend is wrong, it measures the restriction.

I went down to Napa today and got it. $28 out the door with the AAA discount. I took out the old one and looked at it, then I opened the new one and was like, holy crap! There is no comparison. Name: Photo-0576.jpg

Size: 57.0 KB First thing I noticed so far in the 6 mile trip home was the turbo doesn't make as much noise. Less boost being used = more mpg? I can wish, right? I'm averaging 17.6 mpg, mostly around town with my last tank, 1 quart of 2 cycle and Smarty on 1, keeping my fingers crossed....

The Napa Gold/Wix 2846 has 2" pleats. It is rated at 675cfm like the 4" pleat 9946 but has a lower dirt holding capacity.
