Don-T, I'm with you. I have the DPPI stainless exhaust system. I liked it until I picked up a farm tractor and had a 6 hour haul. Mine was only quiet when going down hill. It really roars when pulling hard and at normal tow with a load, the sound gets old. With no load it is nice but drones or roars when pulling or lugging. I have a 5th wheel and do not want to hear that when towing.
I hope the poll works and answers some question.

Matt,

Try the closest Cummins dealer. I got the Nelson 86131M from Cummins Northwest for $68.00 tax included.

Thanks Big Bob, I will check into it. BTW did your factory tail pipe mount up to the round Nelson you used or did you change the tail pipe?

Matt,

Stock tailpipe with Rip's 4" x 6" x 24" Stainless Steel Tip. The 6" give it a deep throaty sound. While at Rips, I put the 5", 5 1/2" and 6" on before I made my decision. The 6" was definately the way to go. I think it was somewhere around $90.

Interesting that the tip would change the sound so noticeably.
I am still scratching my head on the muffler change.
Donaldson M090544 or a Nelson 86131

RTillery said in this thread:

The Donaldson M090544 has a crimped, cone shaped baffle in it down about 18" from the inlet. Outside the truck, you can hear a little big rig rumble but inside, going down the road with the windows up it is quieter than stock.

And that sure would be nice but I haven’t heard from any short bed owners with a 51”er. I am thinking the baffles contribute to drone as the flow gets disturbed and starts to resonate inside the muffler. If that is the case the Nelson you have would be better. I gotta have windows up quiet with no drone or I may go back to stock.

In my search I came across the silent partner several times.
Here is a clip from an article.
" According to the company the results show that a Silent Partner- equipped truck produces half as much engine exhaust noise during engine braking than a conventionally-muffled truck. Acceleration exhaust noise was cut by 25 percent. The design also manages to smooth the octave bands produced by engine braking. This converts the braking noise into a mellow exhaust tone. Yet, fuel economy and powertrain performance remain unaffected."
However it was mainly for the exhaust brake noise on larger trucks, but the add sure did sound good. Matt sorry to hear it did not work for you. I may go ahead and get the M090544. I have a short bed and then I can tell you how it works. Unfortunately, I do not have the stock anymore so I will be buying another muffler.

The silent partner is also made by donaldson. Maybe it is a good product, just not for our trucks.

fanofthewolf,
Yes If RTillery is correct about the windows up noise level then the M090544 would be nice as it has plenty of flow.

The M101181 I got is listed for a Volvo, that and with it being 5" inlet/outlet may be where I got off track with all the high flow great silencing features and it simply isn't tuned for the pulses of a 5.9 Cummins.

I would be interested to know how the M090544 sounds on a short bed for sure, if you get one and don't have the opportunity to tow with it maybe an incline hill with the rpm's in the 1600-1900 range will duplicate any possible cab drone. Hope it works!

I am ordering today. The incline is no problem I have a 1000 ft climb each time I go home. I live on a small mountain and had noticed where the route seemed the same as medium and hard pulls.
Maybe I can let you know something by the weekend.
And for those that like a little more sound,
I'll be freeing up a very good stainless steel performance muffler

Matt, I'll post here and IM you some details.

fanofthewolf,

This is excellent news...thanks for taking the dive first. I know others are happy with their 51" muffs but haven't heard from a short bed owner. 2 feet of it will be right under the cab just like my Silent Partner.

In the morning I have a 4 day trip and may have to tow with OD off to keep the cab noise down.

I ordered my 51" Nelson this morning. I might be using it with the Banks 4" downpipe on my QC-SB truck. I hope it's not a big difference from the LWB trucks!

Good to see someone else from Edmond on here. I would like to check out your truck sometime.

I installed a FULL BOAR muffler on my truck about two weeks after I bought it.
( www.fullboarexhaust.com ) It's a straight through with a 4" outlet, and a 3.5" input.
As soon as the Holset 4" elbow becomes available, I guese I will be replacing it. It sure is a LOT better than stock though.

SoCal-305,
This will be great as we will be able to compare your Baffeless Nelson against the Baffled Donaldson fanofthewolf ordered and both on Short bed Quad Cabs.
