Thumbs up 51" Nelson muffler !!!!

Well I got my Edge EZ put on 3 days ago so figured I had better get a little more free flowing exhaust to keep EGT's in check especially since I do not have my guages yet. I had planned on going with many others advice and getting the 51" donaldson muffler but when I sent my buddy to pick one up for each of our trucks he showed up at the muffer installation shop with 51" Nelson mufflers instead they were 4 in and 4 out so we went ahead and had them installed. It turned out absolutely perfect. About the same noise level at idle but just a little deeper tone. About 15% louder under acceleration with a very nice deep tone. At highway cruising speed(65-80mph) there is a significant decrease in interior noise. I could not hardly believe it but it was almost scary how much smoother and quieter it was at highway speeds I had never really noticed the drone everyone was complaining about but must have had some of it and now do not have any at all. I noticed a little more throttle response also. I do wonder how the flow rate of this muffler compares to others that you guys have installed and how it compares to the stocker that is now in the junk pile. The book says this muffler is supposed to flow something like 1750cfm or something like that is this good in comparison to others or not? I know it is better that stock but does anyone have the stockers flow rate just for comparison? Again I could not be happier with the sound so I feel like it must not have as good of flow rate or something because that would just be to good to be true.

Here are your Washington State Donaldson retailers. Seeing that they are in the truck muffler business, I would bet they carry more name brands than just Donaldson. Enjoy.

draebi,
That sounds like the kind of performance I'm looking for in a muffler. Could you tell me the p/n of the Nelson muffler and what type (Straight through, baffles, etc.) it is. Also, did you use a 4" to 3.5" adapter on the input or did you replace the 3.5" down pipe. Thanks,

The Boss Hog

Are we talking Nelson as in Fleetguard as in a wholly owned subsidiary of Cummins Inc?

Unhappy

Sorry guys for getting on here and talking so good about something without more details but I was just really pleased with the way it turned out and wanted to let you all know my results. My buddy picked the mufflers up at a store named FleetPride. It cost $53 for muffler and $50 to install so total of $103. # on the reciept says M4490 I do not know if that is the part # or not but I will call them tommorrow and get more details for you guys. Like I said before I thought he was getting the 51" donaldson mufflers and he showed up at the muffler install shop with the Nelsons and since they had same dimensions I just took the chance and had it put on. I did not keep box but it said Nelson on the end of box and on the muffler itself but I will find out tommorrow the for sure part# and if it is a division of Cummins or not. I believe exact dimensions were 4in/4out 9"straight through barrel that measure 48"long and over all length was 51". I kept original downpipe and tailpipe and just had him put in the reducer to match my downpipe that was included in install price. I did not see much need to replace downpipe until I get a turbo with 4" outlet which will not be for another year or two when warranty is up. Then I will start having a little more fun with bombing.

Question

Forgot to ask again did the flow rate I stated make any sense for a muffler of this type that is what they told him when he picked them up? I am still wondering how this compares to flow rate of the stocker and other aftermarket mufflers. Thanks

Don't know what these numbers mean, but something to compare to.

I was told the stocker flowed 320 cfm.

Specs on my Donaldson:
Rated Flow LR (CFM): 1524
Rated Flow MR (CFM): 2155
Rated Flow HR (CFM): 2639
Back Press LR (In Hg): 1
Back Press MR (In Hg): 2
Back Press HR (In Hg): 3

Like I said, don't ask me what all that means.

In lay man's terms, it means it flows a lot more than stock.

Hey, If you get down to Moore give me a shout or over by Baptist Hosp. I work near there. I would love to hear your truck, I want to get rid of the highway drone and have a little sound when I get on it, but quiet down the highway. I found a part number on the fleetguard site. Here is a link,:Fleetguard Nelson Muffler select type 1 mufflers, its about 6 pages into the list ,on mufflers, 61-70 last one on the page. 21489N 9" around, 44.5" body, overall length 51"

Does this sound about right?

Thanks for the info!:cool

LR/MR/HR is low range, medium range, high range. those specs are to assist the vehicle designer in matching the engine flow rates with the muffler flow rates. According to Donaldson, the goal is to provide between 1 and 3 inches of mercury backpressure (thats betwen .5 and 1.5 psi approximately). The donaldson will provide the listed back pressures at the listed flow rates (i.e. 1/2 psi backpressure at 1524 CFM).

The Nelson 21489N is a type 2 muff listed in the type 1 section on the website (click on the part number to see the spec details). Nelson/Fleetguard does not have drawings for it. They do have a 21489A which is used on some very old Cummins VT-903 and Detroit 6V-71T engines. They did not have flow rate specs for the 21489A.

Nelson does have a model 86108M 4" I/O 51" muff that crosses to the Donaldson M090544. But the Nelson 86108M is only a 1600 CFM device whereas the Donaldson is a 2600 CFM device (at 3" mercury). I can only guess that the Nelson would be quieter due to more elaborate internal baffling (it has four chambers)

Whats really fascinating to me is that according to Nelson (a std formula they provide), a turbocharged 5.9L 4 stroke diesel running at 3000 rpm and 1200 degrees ETG exhausts at about 1300 CFM. According to their own formula, the Nelson 86106M is sufficient flow rate and the Donaldson is, well, "extra room for growth" shall we say

At 3000 rpm and 1200 degrees EGT, the Nelson 86108M will give about 1 psi of backpressure and the Donaldson M090544 will give less than .5 psi.

I'm expecting faxes soon from both donaldson and Nelson with drawings of these muffs

yea the 1750 cfm makes sense but this flow rate is lower than the donaldson and higher than the Nelson 86108 which supposedly crosses to the donaldson. So if you could get the excact Nelson part number of your muff that would help straighten this out. From what I've learned thus far, the shop would have supplied a 1600 CFM Nelson 68108 when asked for a 2639 CFM Donaldson M090544 'casue thats what the Nelson book says to do.

Doug, Wow.....

Thats more info than I ever thought about for a muffler. I can't remember what's under our trucks but seems like a type two? Is the type 1 a tough fit? I wouldn't think so, but that has got me in trouble before! Thanks a bunch for the additional research....let us know what you find out, this might be a cheap upgrade for once!

Info is on the way soon. Just called them and they will look up all info and get back with me.
Chillimau,
I am down at Baptist at least couple times a week and could meet up with you anytime to let you hear it. I will help as much as possible because I know I was really skeptical about cutting my muffler off and replacing it without knowing what it would sound like. This one time I simply got lucky.
