3rd Gen Fuel Pressure Gauge
3rd Gen Fuel Pressure Gauge
The other night I was on the phone with Geno's Garage ordering some parts when the subject of gauges came up. When asked about a fuel pressure gauge the Geno's guy told me the with the new trucks monitoring the FP isn't important. Truck is stock now but will eventually get something like a Quad XZT or 0-30-60-100 box. What are your opinions on FP monitoring with the newer trucks and why? Thanks.
Fuel pressure is still important on these trucks. My truck only has 9psi at idle and ive pulled it down to 3psi. Thats to low for me and ill be fixing it soon with the Glacier diesel Walbro kit.
The second gen trucks were notrious for bad lift pumps taking out the VP44 injection pumps. Fuel pressure monitoring was a must on those. On the 3rd gens it isn't as likely to cause such a catostrophic failure but fuel pressure is everything on these trucks. I measure mine because I ran into a problem once I started asking for HP from my truck. The weak link was the lift pump once again. It just makes sense to measure it. Even on the new in tank pumps as there have been some failures reported it seems to make sense. It's just nice to keep an eye on the weakest link by watching what it is doing all of the time so you don't get any surprises. I put a FASS HPFP on mine and my mileage went up and is smoother at idle and acceleration. I didn't know what I was missing. I find I use a lot less pedal now that I have adequate pressure and I think that explains the mileage gain. Plus it's just one more cool thing to watch on these beasts we own.
Thanks Staarma. I did order the Geno's fuel filter cap that's tapped for the sending unit like you have and just need to decide on a gauge and location for it. If I put the Pyro/tranny temp/boost in the A-pillar set then I've got a single FP gauge that I've got to mount somewhere else. Where did you put yours? What kind of fuel pressure will I see stock and at what HP increase will I have to worry about a fuel pump upgrade?
Here is a pic of mine. I can't be 100% on the in tank as I don't have one but from what I've read it won't be any different than the filter mounted lift pumps in the way of pressure readings. They seem to be around the 9 PSI range at idle and down to 4-5 at WOT stock which is fine. Any kind of module will likely drop it to 2-3 and at that point you will need to address a new pump. Good luck.

Man, look at those depth finders all over that pilot command center...

Staarma, what was installing your edge like? I always thought I'd put gauges on my I-pillar but doing it all in one package is kinda making sense. I guess it pretty much screws up the warrany though?
Installing the Juice and EZ are easy (no pun intended). Literally a ten minute job. The only thing that takes time is the Attitude because you have to drill and tap the manifold for the thermocouple to read EGT. It adds about an hour to the install. I also like the look of a single pod on the A pillar but I really like the function of the Attitude. Not only does it monitor it also provides on the fly power level adjustment as well as safety backdowns for EGT, boost, etc.
As far as warranty goes, gauges pretty much give away any modules you may have or had connectd at time of service anyway. I would recommend calling your local dealer and ask them anonymously what their position is on these issues.
