2003 Motor noise?? Injector rattle??
Well , I gave my truck some moderate abuse recently and now have some noise that I did not have before. It sounds like it is coming from the valve train area.It is a ticking or I should say rattling noise.I turned my smarty back to stock and it does it just as bad. Idling it will come and go and it seems worse at part throttle.Goes away at more throttle.Truck seems to have the same power.Do I need to adjust valves? It seems like only one cylinder? Thanks for any advice.

I am curious too, I have similar sounds now that have come on as of late, I did change my timing settings and it went away but some but it is still there. Definatley different from before. You described my sounds perfectley. Hope someone can help, I sure they will. I adjusted my valves 20k miles ago.

Sounds like carbon buildup on the injector tips. Go out a pull a heavy load, get your EGT's up to 1000 deg and keep em there pulling a heavy grade. Winter time is the worst time for me for this to happen.

My 03 has a very similar rattle/ticking. I just recently adjusted the valves at 85k miles (no major changes to the valves) and it made no real change to the sound. A few months back, I filled the fuel filter canister with Seafoam. It made a dramatic improvement. But it's back now.
The more and more I read about 2003 trucks, the more and more I'm coming to the conclusion that this is "normal".

Yeap, I agree it is the sound of the 03. I did change the oil and added some TX-7 additive for the lubrication of the top end of the motor and it did quiet down alot. Lowered my timing on the smarty too, so that helped too

Mine has suttle tapping. In the winter it's a little more noticable. Sounds like a misadusted valve. Now diesel rattle... oh yea... when it's cold out starting out I can get pretty good diesel rattle. Goes away after a minute or so. Also if you run a box or programmer, depending on the settings, it can increase the diesel rattle under certain loads.
Drive it and enjoy the Cummins sound!

These engine can be quiet noisy when cold. Also will make more noise as they get up in mileage.
I also get a good tapping noise when cold but it coming from the clutch.
