2 micron fuel/water systems

So I just replaced all six injectors and would like to upgrade the filtration system to get more life from the injectors. I have the upgraded lift pump replaced under warranty ( 20,000 mi ago) so I don't need the extra cost of pump plus filters just the filter system.

What are you guys using and what can you recommend?

Would it be best to leave the fuel bowl and filter on the motor and have a second filter and mount the new stuff on the frame rail?

Or remove it and put the new filter system under the hood?

Thanks for your help

I would leave the original filter housing and plumb another filter head between it and the injection pump. I run a Baldwin PF7977 5 micron filter in the original location and a Donaldson P551313 2 micron on the intake horn.

I bought a kit from Vulcan performance. It mounts under the intake horn. Works great and easy to get to the filter to change it. Glacier Diesel's kit is also highly recommended. Of course you can just make your own as well with the fittings and filter head.

Do a search on 2 micron filters and you'll have plenty of reading on this setup. There's been a lot of threads on here about them.

^^ Yup.

There's more options but a nice basic is the 2mic filter between the stock canister and CP3. I just installed the GDP kit last weekend. It was pretty basic and easy. Toughest part was working with one hand in the tight space. Oh then cleaning up the driveway after I primed/purged the system before final hookup

we came up with a better idea using wix 33674 and 33374 filters before the stock filter. if you already have the lift pump relocated to the tank it is about a hour install if the pump is still by the stock filter the hose runs will take longer. if interested pm me with your email address and i will send instructions and pix.

So whats the difference between mounting the filters between the tank and stock filter or between the stock filter and the CP3?

If you put the aftermarket fuel filter between the stock location and the CP3 it will allow the stock system to catch all the big chunks first. Then the aftermarket system only has to worry about debris that are less than 5 microns, giving that your using a Baldwin PF7977 in the stock bowl. Otherwise 7-10 microns for most other filters that fit in the stock location.
Here is what I did (POSTS # 6 and 11) https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/....html?t=257714 I like having the filter inside the engine bay in the rare event a rock or some foreign road debris pokes a hole in the thin sheetmetal of the filter if it was mounted on the frame rail after the tank.

Ok. So on my 03 I have the APPS in front of the air horn so the mount won't work. Does any one have a link to a kit that will work for an 03? or will I have to do the remote on the frame rail?

Frame rail or fab a mount to the head. I've seen a thread of an APPS mounted 2mic kit, just gotta find the link.

Here is my install and insight. I highly recommend GDP products.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=211990

For an APPS truck you can get creative or look at the Wicked kit.. But don't use a Baldwin BF7633, the 5um rating it has is multi-pass it's single pass rating is just under 7um. Replace it with a Donaldson P551313 and your at 2um.

if you put the dual filters between the tank and stock filter you do not ever have to change the stock filter and you can go more than 150,000 miles before the filters need to be changed and they are completely out of the way of everything

How often do the dual filters need to be changed?

I change my fuel filters every 30K. Its a lot of fuel being pumped thru them. I figured I pushed about 30-40K gallons of diesel thru the filters in 30K miles... thats good enough for me.

I would still change the OE filter when you change the others, filters don't last forever.

The APPS is the Accelerator Pedel Position Sensor. Check out this link and click on the pictures with the red circles. That'll show what you're looking for.

I thought it made more sense to use the oem filter as a prefilter and water trap/sensor and put the 2 mic ahead of the cp3. I change both when the oem element is due. I don't worry about which brand element I use in the oem housing cuz it's just a prefilter. I mounted my 2 mic on the left foglight bracket. It's easy to reach under and change it and I catch the drips in a pan. Craig
