06 3500 feul milage sucks what can I do

My 06 is getting 7.5 mpg towing about 16000lbs on state highways at around 60mph ( that is hand calculated). The other thing is she runs hot on egt,s it is nothing to hit 1450 I try to keep it below 1250 but its tough to do pulling the trailer. Im looking for so ideas on lowering egts and raising feul millage thanks for any help JD

Do you see black smoke at WOT and what boost pressure do you see? Maybe time for injectors before you melt a piston.

wingnut13 08-20-2012 03:56 PM

It clears up at WOT the boost is in the high 30,s on acceleration

no codes are setting such as over boost P0234?
Several Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be set that will indicate high or low system boost levels. There is a DTC for circuit faults relating to the electronically controlled wastegate command valve.

Turbocharger wastegate stuck closed
Turbocharger wastegate signal line leaking or damaged
Damaged wastegate command valve O-rings
Wastegate command valve mechanically stuck in actuated position

There was a boost code on it a few weeks ago but I did not clear it ,I dont recall what one now but its not on it now. According to the edge there are no trouble codes on it now.

I forgot that I had the batterys unhooked the ohter night would that clear the boost codes?

DTC's are stored in the ecm. Unhooking batts won't clear them. You need a scan tool with those capabilities. Not sure if the Edge can do it or not. Most programmers have the option to clear trouble codes.

The edge / ATT will clear codes, hows your exhaust , i had trouble with egts pulling a 15000 lb fiver in the hills, turned out to be the muffler was too restrictive, went back to a magnaflow , got rid of the flo pro max, amazing diff .

You might want to consider getting rid of the Edge and going with Smarty Jr (effective in lowering EGTs and increase fuel mileage).
What gear ratio do you have and what tire size are you running? (3.73 or 4.10?) The 3.73s might explain your high egts in a low rpm range. The 4.10s might explain poor fuel mileage. Hence, if you have bigger tires, it will only compound the problem).
I know your going to love hearing this, but if you tow that heavy...you might want to consider getting a twin turbo set-up.
Again, not trying to sell you on the Smarty Jr, but I know a lot of people experince an improvement in the areas where you are concerned with the Smarty over the Edge.
Hope this helps...this is simply my suggestion. Hope you get some solid answers here!

I think he possibly might have something else working against him here. I use to consistently gross 26k lbs on a daily basis and completely stock the highest egt I ever experienced was about 1350*. Granted my fuel mileage was horrible as well not only because of the weight but also because the loads had to fall at either 14' or 13' 6" depending on what states I was going through. Was more or less like a huge sail catching the head winds . I'd start leaning towards injector issues. Just my .02

It has a 4'' MRB resonator then 5'' from the resonator to the stack. To be real honest I don't know what gears it has but I would guess it has 3.73s I am running the stock tire size 235/80/17. A buddy of mine has a snapon scanner he thinks he can do the kill test on the injectors so I guess that's my next step. sure hope it don't need injectors because it needs a clutch and I don't want to be the one explaining to the kid that he cant go to collage because the truck needed parts

thanks JD
