03 new injectors and she ran backwards

I had no part in this. I suspect he got shipped a late model set of injectors and they were installed in an early model truck

The injectors were installed by a Chrysler 5 star diesel tech who's been doing this for 30+ years so im pretty sure he knew what he was doing.

That all said. what occured is the guy has an 03 SO with Edge and a mildly built automatic 120k miles and the in tank lift pump, he bought a set of 120hp DDP injectors since one of his stockers was slobbering. the new injectors were installed on saturday. when everything was buttoned up and he fired up the truck the truck chugged a few times then ran at between 2000-3000 rpm pushing white smoke out the air filter. He said it was about 5-8 seconds the first time and the shop was full of white smoke. there was a hose on the exhaust pipe for venting the exhaust outside.

He swears that the motor was turning backwards. he drained the fuel system, opened up the valve cover and rechecked his wiring on the injectors, tried one more time and that time he said the motor did the same thing when he fired it up it went to WOT about 3k it sounded like and again filled the garage with smoke for about 10 seconds. Scared him and a the owner of the shop pretty good since they were both there, something about the owner of the shop diving for cover wish i had been there to see a 300 lbs man diving fir cover

i was out of town, so i dont know what the heck happened but upon first hearing about this it sounds like an injector timing issue

Anyone got any thoughts

I'm thinking for the engine to run backwards the starter had to be turning the wrong direction initally or the cylinders were partially full of diesel from fuel leaking into them and the engine hydraulic locked and then spun backwards to relive the pressure and checked off for a couple of seconds. Chances are the engine is not in very good shape now.

I've had pump motors run backwards. It never really hurt anything. The locks would go out on the gear-head and the water going back down the bowls had enough force to run the motor up to 2,000 rpms backwards. It was a little scary though.

They will run backwards i had my CASE diesel tractor do it last year. I had too much load at to little rpm and it stalled i just caught it with the clutch and it continued to run when i let out the clutch and it went backwards i knew what happened and killed it. Waited couple minutes refired and went or course in forward and never a prob. since. BUT i have know idea how to get one to do it with out it sneezing and kick backwards? Unless as said the starter somehow turned in reverse
