I just bought an '03 6 speed cummins HO and i was wondering if it was the same motor as in the '04.5 -'05 as far as putting performance parts on it. and if not what are the differences.

 

For the most part they are the same,, you have to watch what you are buying however as there are somethings that just done work between the 2

exhaust elbows are not the same size i found out the fun way

 

I think 4.5 and up is when they got the 3rd injector event, oil cooling on the pistons and some small physical changes like electric wastegate control vs. mechanical. Mentioned above is the different exhaust elbow. (3.5" vs 4")The biggie is a completely different ecm that makes it easier to get big power with just downloaders/modules. If you are looking at big power, once you get to a certain level of mods-- then the differences are insignificant.

 

also you will get better milage from a 03-early 04.
