'03 3500 5.9 looking for some GOOD towing setups

'03 QC DRW 3500 2WD

Had this truck for 4 yrs no problems at all. Its mainly my work truck - tows about 15,000 lbs or more on a daily basis (bobcat, dump trailer, etc). Great truck, worth every penny to me & i dont mind spending some money in it as its never let me down.

Looking for a good towing setup. Its a 47RE, trans is being done soon....triple disc converter, all the little upgrades etc. 3.73 gear out back

Looking for a good strong towing setup....currently have Diablosport Predator & boost fooler

I want this thing to tow like ease & get decent mileage like it does now.

I've read about the h351 turbo etc...just need a direction!

Any info would be great.

My signature shows what I have done and I tow allot more than you do, just not as often. When reading what I have, I have not towed yet with the addition of the air bags, PacBrake, Smarty or HE351. My first tow will probably be May for the Darlington NASCAR race. I am one of the lucky ones that have other vehicles to drive daily and pretty much put the truck away for winter, I think my Ram has only seen snow once or twice.

The HE351 is a good cheap upgrade, and will get you a bit more air on the top end, and similar air on the bottom end.

Are you wanting more power? Lower EGTs?

What are you unhappy with now?

Thanks for the replies guys. When i said 15,000 lbs, i was being a little generous in the wrong direction lol.

This truck has pulled my 38' Gooseneck with the T/A in side many times on weekends.....during the week it's usually attached to the float with the Bobcat, or a few pallets of brick.....or the dump trailer which hauls 7 tons @ a time + the 3800lbs trailer weight.

It see's some good workouts...and has been wintered maybe 5x in 4 years....as DRW 2wd's are useless in the winter here!

As for what i want - MORE PULLING POWER. It pulls decent but is definetly sluggish @ only 250HP/480TQ stock (or so). This is the non HO motor.

More pulling power, tq, off the line power, etc... is what im looking for. Pulling 7 tons up the hills in the pits isnt exactly easy to do...it works pretty hard doing it....really hard actually.

Mileage is great, reliability is great, just need to add a few hundred lbs-ft

Okay, thats the info we needed.

Based on the amount you tow I would certainly do a tubro upgrade. A HE351 is cheap and will support about 325/650 to the ground for towing with good EGT's.

I would get a smarty Jr and set it on SW1 and see how you like it. The Smarty Jr will bring you up to HO programming, and then add the power. SW1 is a mid-range gain, not a peak gain and its quite noticable when towing. If you want more and the EGT's can handle it then SW2 is as high as I would go with the weight you tow at.

As far as turbo's, like I've said HE351 is cheap and decent air, don't expect miracles but it does flow roughly 200 CFM more than your stock turbo, but isn't the most efficient on the turbine side. If you want more turbo there are lots of options in the 1300-1800 range that will work. BD Super B, Garrett Stage 2, EB 62/68/12, BD Killer B, etc... If you wand the best towing turbo and price isn't a big deal get the Garrett, super fast spool and plenty of air to tow with and not bother looking at the EGT gauge.

If you put more than 35 psi of boost to the system I would put studs in it based on the load you run.

More expensive for sure, but the new Borg Warner Efr series turbos in the 62mm variety is a good choice as well.

Yeah the 8374 has a 62.6x83.5 comp wheel rated at about 78 lb/min, thats a LOT of air for a 63mm wheel. The 63mm wheel in the BD and ED turbo's is a 73 lb/min wheel.

The turbine has a 74mm inducer, but I can't find the trim or exducer numbers.

EDIT: found it, 64mm exducer on the 8374. So it's a 63/64/.83 on the T3.

I am not yet sure how you would run the discharge line as its flared for a hose and not a 90* elbow.

Ok where do I get on of those HE 351 turbos....

Can you stack the Predator with the Smarty JR? Or just get rid of the Predator all together?

Since they are both tuners no you can't stack them.

You can find HE351's on here, or on ebay.

I'll have one for sale in about 6 weeks.

You can get them now.

On the discharge, they offer a 90* elbow that V-band clamps on to the comp housing. I think that is a slip on at the end too but not sure.
Those are pricey turbos for sure, but have a lot of packed in features.

If I was making a street/strip twins set, this would be the secondary turbo of choice for me with the smaller T-4 twinscroll EH.
Now I have not seen one and am simply going off of what I have read, and thus is all there for everone else to read as well, but the discharge in the pictures appaears to be a slip on, but reading the details, it can be either slip on or v-band.

I looked them up & they seem to be from the 6.7 motors.........is the VGT thing going to be a problem with the swap?

How does it work with my older 5.9 as far as controlling it?
