who built the 68 RFE?

my buddy tried to convince me that allison built the 68 rfe because as far as he knew they were the only company building 6 spd auto's, i told him that i knew aisin was building the 4500/5500 series trannys but i didnt know who built the 25/3500 series 68's so that just made him try harder because i couldnt prove him wrong. now curiosity got the best of me dammit haha

I think Dodge builds it, not Allison. You're correct on the CC trucks.

I believe Orion Industries is building the 68RFE.

Allison, Ford, Aisin, Cat, all make 6 speeds

You can get a 6 speed in your 1/2 ton Chevy too. I drove a rental Denali with one and thats GM.. There is confusion on the 6 spd on Dodge due to the Aisin in the CC trucks.. I know a few salesmen that said the Aisin was in all the trucks, not true. The 68RFE is a "Dodge" tranny for what its worth.

I didnt hold a lot of faith that he was right, he was also trying to convince me that an edge or bully dog was the only prorammers that are capable of full deletes[dummy] ya i got a good laugh out of it when he had never heard of a smarty or h&s programmer haha

I am a retired engineer from Caterpillar Inc,one of my engineering team members worked for Chrysler as he put himself through school at Prudue University. He worked at the stamping plant for the transmission cases in In. He stated that the gears set's were designed by Mercedes Benz and the case was designed by Chrysler for the 68RFE transmission. The manufacturing of the components and assembled was done by Chrysler at another plant.

The 68RFE "Orion" is a Chrysler product and built at the Chrysler plant in Kokomo Indiana. I'm sure they source the parts from multiple places. The 68RFE got it's foundation from the 545RFE, but heavily beefed up.

I remember when I bought mine the sales manager was telling me they took the tranny out of the Mercedes work trucks and modified it to make this one. I don't know where he heard it from but I didn't know squat about dodge at the time so I didn't think much of it.

As posted in #8, the 68 is a "big" version of the 45 that has been behind the 5.7 gasser since it's inception. That trans has been pretty trouble free for the most part too.
